Can You Play as Atreus in God of War Ragnarök? Answered

Will you be the boy?

One of the main rules of sequels is to bring what was great about the first installment and expand upon it. Bringing too much of the same could be entertaining, but could become very repetitive. That’s why game sequels always try to bring something new to the table. New graphics, new storylines, new conflicts, new characters, and even new playable characters. This last bit is what has been the debate since God of War Ragnarök was announced. With Kratos being the sole protagonist of the God of War franchise, being able to play as another character would be groundbreaking to say the least. Well, if there is any character that could fill Kratos’ shoes (at least a bit), that would be Atreus, Kratos’ son. So, can you play as Atreus in God of War Ragnarök? Let’s find out.

Like I said, changing God of War’s playable character is a bold move. So it’s great that the folks at Santa Monica Studios aren’t shy from making bold decisions. Can you play as Atreus in God of War Ragnarök? You bet your Ares armor you can! Atreus marks the first time in the series where you can play as another character other than Kratos. Not only does the game give you the opportunity to play as the Ghost of Sparta’s son, but it will give you a special set of abilities.

Atreus plays much different from Kratos and will have certain blocks of the story dedicated to his adventure. After all, he is a kid that’s growing into an adult, while struggling with his identity as Loki, just like her mother wanted him to be named. If that’s not some adolescent struggle, then I don’t know what is. Just a disclaimer: the game chooses when and where you will play with each character, so take that into account and keep your expectations under control.

Be sure to enjoy both Kratos and Atreus in this new adventure through the Norse realms. Finally, you’ll get to be the boy, and that’s fantastic.
