It Takes Two

Though this game came out in 2021, it is by far one of the best couch co-op games ever made and you’d be missing out on so much by passing it up. It relishes in its zaniness by allowing players to traverse some truly memorable places and has a Toy Story-like feel to it. It’s a two-player puzzle-platformer that tasks players with solving intricate puzzles and playing minigames, all of which require the players to work in unison. It also has a great story that works really well with the game mechanics it introduces.

LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga

If you want a game to play with a partner for near-endless hours, even past its 10+ hours campaign, then this one is a perfect choice. For Star Wars fans, LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga has hundreds of characters to unlock, collectibles to find, and so much of what franchise fans love that it’ll make you wonder how the devs were able to pull it off. The LEGO games have always been couch co-op oriented, but this one takes the cake as there’s just so much to do. The missions are fun and don’t have too much difficulty, so it’s a great choice for families as well.

Cuphead

While the original Cuphead came out in 2017, its new DLC, The Delicious Last Course has only recently released this past June. This new DLC ups the ante by making things even more difficult with a whole new collection of stages and bosses. Additionally, there’s a new character to play as, new weapons, and new charms. Just like the original though, this DLC is completely multiplayer, meaning you can take a beating with a teammate. There are also some great stages that manage to introduce brand new gameplay moments, keeping things fresh for returning players.

The Quarry

Gamers looking for a playable horror flick a definitely going to want to check out The Quarry. This horror title puts you in the shoes of its various playable characters where every choice could be the difference between life and death for each of them. There are a couple of different ways to play this with friends, with the best being one where you pass the controller around as you make decisions for the characters. There’s even a way to pick the characters’ traits so that you can just sit back and watch the entire story play out. Popcorn anyone?

Halo Infinite

As of now, only the multiplayer portion of Halo Infinite allows for two-player split-screen capabilities. While that’s all fine and good, what’s really going to be a blast is when the co-op Campaign mode and Forge mode allow for split-screen as well. Though there is no concrete date of when these features will be coming to Infinite, 343 Industries has said that Fall is their target. With the Infinite campaign being such a good one and with it including a fully open world to explore and swing around, it’ll be exciting to see what kind of hijinks a co-op option could bring.

That’s our list of the top 5 best Xbox One couch co-op and local multiplayer games to play in 2022. There are a lot of great games out there and while they may not have made the list, any time with friends is a good time. Hopefully, the games industry will continue to push out even more fantastic local multiplayer games in the future.
