Best Rat King Build in Destiny 2

Unusual choice.

If you’re out looking for the best Rat King build in Destiny 2, then you’re one… interesting Guardian. The Rat King has been in Destiny 2 since the Red War, and yet it’s never seen any sort of META usage. Despite that, it’s something of a cult favorite amongst certain members of the community, so I suppose it’s only natural that some people wonder what the big deal with it is.

I’ve put together what I consider to be the best Rat King build in Destiny 2. While you can make the Exotic work with other classes and builds, this is the one that’ll get you the absolute most value out of the gun’s unique properties.

This build is all about taking advantage of the natural Invisibility (Invis) that Rat King gives us. You’re never going to be near multiple people all also using Rat King, making that aspect of the Exotic useless – so you have no choice but to spec into its Invis functionality.

In light of that, it’s obvious that the class we should be running for this is Hunter. Void Hunters have the best Invisibility support in the entire game – it’s the entire gimmick of its subclass. It’ll synergize incredibly nicely with Rat King, giving you a well-balanced build that has some of the best survivability in all of Destiny 2.

Starting off with your Super, Dodge, and Grenade, you want to be using:

  • Vortex Grenades
  • Gambler’s Dodge
  • Deadfall

Vortex Grenades are arguably the best Void PvE Grenade in the game. They pull enemies in, dealing great damage over time while also clustering your enemies for a follow-up melee or explosive. We’re going to be specing pretty hard into this Grenade, so you don’t really want to use anything else.

Void Hunter’s Melee Smoke Bomb is incredibly powerful. They synergize with one of this build’s Aspects to give you quick and easy access to Invisibility, meaning you’ll want your Melee up as much as possible. Gambler’s Dodge is perfect to that end. There’s no real reason to run Marksman’s Dodge over it.

Super wise, you can run either Mobius Quiver or Deadfall, but I recommend Deadfall. Mobius Quiver will give you more burst DPS, but the 30% debuff from Deadfall is now the best in the game. Combine that with how long it lasts, and you’ve got the foundation for a build that can you upwards of 80% extra damage on a boss, solo.

After dealing with your initial build setup, you’ll want to slot in these two Aspects:

  • Vanishing Step
  • Stylish Executioner

Both of these Aspects are what’s supplementing this build’s Invisibility engine. Vanishing Step is the best instant-Invis in all of Destiny 2, giving you Invisibility anytime you dodge. On top of that, Dodging near enemies with Gambler’s Dodge refunds your Melee, meaning you get access to another source of Invisibility.

Stylish Executioner is going to allow both our Melee and Grenade to trigger Invisibility. This Aspect gives us Invisibility any time we kill a Void-debuffed enemy. Our Melee debuffs naturally, and we have a Fragment that’ll let our Grenades debuff, too. Stylish Executioner is what really helps pull this build together.

After sorting out your Aspects, you have to deal with your Fragments:

  • Echo of Remenants
  • Echo of Undermining
  • Echo of Starvation
  • Echo of Persistence

Echo of Remenants is going to let our Vortex Grenades last longer on the field. Not only will this massively increase the damage of the grenade, but it’s going to lean into our additional functionality of allowing Grenade kills to trigger Invisibility.

Speaking of that functionality, Echo of Undermining is what enables it. This Fragment will make your Void Grenades Weaken targets. This then allows Stylish Executioner to trigger, granting you Invis when either you or your Grenade finish a target that your Grenade hit.

Echo of Starvation is an integral part of this build’s survivability, especially if you decide not to learn too heavily into Invisibility. This Fragment grants you Devour anytime you pick up an Orb of Power. With Kinetic Siphon, you should almost always have Devour up, giving you massive Grenade and Health regeneration.

Lastly, Echo of Persistence is a nice bow on top of an already incredible build. With Persistence slotted, your Invisibility and Devour buffs are going to last longer. It’s simple but remarkably powerful.

Put all this together with your Rat King, and you’ll end up spending more time Invisible than you ever thought possible.
