Bayonetta 3: What are Phenomenal Remnants and How to Unlock Them

Challenges hidden around every corner.

One thing you see pretty often in the Bayonetta series is strange terms that sound really cool but don’t have any obvious meaning. Things like “Remembrance of Time” or “Eyes of the World.” One such example of this concept in Bayonetta 3 is the Phenomenal Remnants, though if you want to see all the game has to offer, you’ll want to learn what they actually are. So what are Phenomenal Remnants in Bayonetta 3, and how do you unlock them?

What are Phenomenal Remnants and How to Unlock Them

Phenomenal Remnants are, effectively, secret chapters in Bayonetta 3, existing in parallel to the game’s main chapters. Every main chapter has a Phenomenal Remnant that corresponds to it, with each containing a variety of gameplay challenges. Many of them have gauntlets of enemy encounters, while others may require you to solve a puzzle or complete an objective within a time limit.

Besides just getting the most time out of the game as you can, there’s a practical reason to unlock and complete Phenomenal Remnants: rewards. Not only do you get large quantities of Seeds, Halos, and Orbs from completing Phenomenal Remnants, but you can also unlock special accessories and weapons that aren’t available from the Gates of Hell. There are even a couple of secret bosses hidden within them!

So how do you actually unlock a Phenomenal Remnant for a chapter? You need to find all of a chapter’s Umbran Tears of Blood. Every main chapter of the game where you’re playing as Bayonetta or Viola contains three Umbran Tears of Blood, held by three Umbran familiars: a toad, a crow, and a black cat. These familiars will either hide or run from you when you get close, but if you can touch them, they’ll relinquish their Umbran Tear of Blood. If you have trouble seeing the familiars themselves, keep an eye out for the distinct red line of light created by the Tears they carry.

If you can find the toad, crow, and black cat in a particular chapter, that chapter’s corresponding Phenomenal Remnant will become available on the chapter select screen, denoted by a red icon. If you don’t find all three familiars in one run-through of a chapter, that’s okay. You can always go back to a chapter from the chapter select screen to look for the ones you missed.

Try to uncover all of the Umbran Tears of Blood so you can tackle all the Phenomenal Remnants. Trust me, the rewards will make the effort worth it.
