Following this year’s The Game Awards, thatgamecompany and Norwegian musician AURORA started an in-game concert event for players to engage in and enjoy in Sky: Children of the Light. Running from December 8th through January 2nd, players can expect to watch this concert event every 4 hours.

But while in-game concert events aren’t really a new thing thanks to Epic Games’ own Fortnite, AURORA’s concert in Sky: Children of the Light not only featured beautiful music and visuals but told a bigger, story that many fans would be able to resonate with.

After having experienced it myself, I’d have to say that AURORA’s concert in Sky: Children of the Light is the best in-game concert yet. And one could only hope, “will more concerts follow?”.

Don’t get me wrong, I love when Fortnite has music concerts, especially when they’re as big as the Ariana Grande one. But aside from some amazing visuals and level design, it mostly plays out as some big in-game music video than anything else. Rarely is there a true message in the event aside from the artists being the center of attention.

In AURORA’s concert in Sky, however, that’s the exact opposite of what happens. Using Sky’s gorgeous art design, the developers and AURORA were able to create a cohesive experience using her songs and their game design. Players would oftentimes have to rely on each other during the concert in small moments that really echoed in AURORA’s music; the fact that humans need each other and the planet, for that matter.

The concert also barely even focused on AURORA as an in-game person, and more so as a voice for the dialogue. She didn’t have some over-the-top character design, and was instead just as normal and basic-looking as all of the players in Sky, which made it easier to connect with the music and messages being shown on-screen.

If you haven’t ever listened to AURORA; her songs oftentimes talk about how humans need each other, sorrow, finding yourself, saving the planet, and love. All of this is brought together on-screen with some extremely strong visual representations that actually brought tears to my eyes as I played and watched.

It makes me hope that there are more concerts like this, not only in Sky but in places like Fortnite too going forward. Concerts that can beautifully bring an artist’s message and songs to life on screen in such a positive way are just what the world needs right now.
