These games range from across many different genres as well as various times of gaming history. From the early 80s to modern gaming, these games are sure to show that there is no shortage of some truly difficult puzzles in games. Buckle your setabelts and let’s check them out!

King’s Quest – Gnome’s Name

Our first and oldest game of the list is King’s Quest. This infamous puzzle was so difficult that the game’s helpline were masters in delivering the answer to the game’s puzzle. At this moment in King’s Quest, Sir Graham is tasked with guessing the name of the gnome in order to continue on. The name is basically an anagram of the name Rumplestiltskin but not in that spelling. You’ll have to take the letters, and reverse the alphabet altogether, meaning A is Z and so on. So, the actual answer is Ifknovhgroghprm.

Runescape – Deaf Prisoner

Our next one is difficult mostly due to the lengths one has to go through in order to accomplish it. In the Old School Runescape, one of the quests players are tasked to complete is to find the infamous pirate. To do so, you have to land yourself in jail in order to speak to the only person who knows where he is, the Deaf Prisoner. First, you have to land yourself in jail, then get doused with fish stew by cops for making a ruckus, then break out into the prison yard and create a whole matter of makeshift jailbreak items, attract seagulls to then catch with your makeshift vaccuum made of an accordian, shoot the Seagull at the prisoner, and then you’ll finally be able to speak with him.

Silent Hill – The Piano Puzzle

For 90s gamers, most of you may associate difficult puzzles with none other than 1999s survival horror, Silent Hill. Most notably, the infamous Piano Puzzle that came along with it. This puzzle is comprised of different codes that have to be decyphered. Once decyphered, it shows in what order the piano keys have to be played in order to retrieve the Silver Medalion. In order to deycpher this code though, you’ll need to get the poem housing the clues. The difficult thing is that this poem talks about birds and their colors which match the piano keys, though they aren’t obviously linked directly to which keys. The first is going to be the third white key with blood, your second is going to be the seventh white key with blood, the third is the black key next to that one, the fourth is the sixth white bloody key, and the fifth is th very first black key in the blood.

Fez – The Black Monolith

Our fourth entry comes from the puzzle platfromer, Fez. This is by far one of the most difficult games of this genre out there, so if you’ve even made it this far in-game, great job. Without getting to deep into the lore on this one (because it’s a rabbit hole), you’ll need to enter Down, Down, LT, RT, RT, Jump, Up in order to unlock the monolith and gain access to the additional areas of the room where the Red Cube is hidden.

Braid – The Hidden Ending

Quite possibly one of the most difficult puzzles out there is the one that needs to be solved in order to unlock Braid’s hidden ending. To do so, you’ll need to collect 8 different stars that are hidden throughout the game. But, while it may sound easy, it is anything but. These stars are often times, hidden off-screen, a couple need to be collected in sequence, and one actually makes you wait an hour as you watch clouds move by to reveal its position. It’s ridiculous.
