As you venture through the Lands Between in Elden Ring, you need to keep your weaponry in tip-top shape. Enemies get bigger and have thicker hides, so you gotta make sure your sword can always stab right through ‘em. To do this, you gotta upgrade it, and to do that, you’re gonna need Smithing Stones, and a lot of ‘em. Here’s how to get Smithing Stones in Elden Ring

Smithing Stones are your basic upgrade materials, used when upgrading weapons yourself or with Hewg at the Roundtable Hold. They’re ranked by grades ranging from 1 to 8, as well as Ancient Dragon Smithing Stones, which are used to fully upgrade a weapon. Upgrading your weapon will require multiple Smithing Stones of gradually increasing grades, so securing a supply of every grade is super important.

How to Get Smithing Stones in Elden Ring

Listing the means by which you can obtain every kind of Smithing Stone would take way too long, so here’s the short version. You can get Smithing Stones in the following ways:

• Excavating in caves and mines
• Buying them from Merchants
• Finding Bell Bearings and giving them to the Twin Husks

Excavating for Smithing Stones

Smithing Stones of all kinds of grades can be excavated from the various caves and mineshafts of the Lands Between. Basically, if it has a rocky wall, and those old miner guys are poking at the said wall, odds are good there are plenty of Smithing Stones to find. A particular cave can house multiple kinds of Smithing Stones, but in general, the more difficult the region the cave is located in, the higher grade of stone you’ll find. Stones in Limgrave, for instance, will usually be around grades 1 to 3, while stones in the Mountaintops of the Giants will be around grades 6 to 8.

Buying Smithing Stones from Merchants

If you stumble across any of the Nomadic Merchants in your travels, check their inventories for Smithing Stones. They’ll usually have a handful of a few different grades on sale for a minor investment of Runes. Be aware, though, that barring a few early-game exceptions, their supplies of stones once restock once you buy them all up.

The best way to secure Smithing Stones is to find the Smithing-Stone Miner’s Bell Bearings. These items can be given to the Twin Maiden Husks in the Roundtable Hold to add certain grades of Smithing Stone to their shop. Unlike with the Merchants, the Stones in the Twin Husk’s shop will never run out, so as long as you’ve got the Runes, they can supply you endlessly.

• Bell Bearing 1: Dropped by the Crystallian boss at the end of Raya Lucaria Crystal Tunnel
