How to Win in F Zero 99?

For some players, F Zero 99 might be your first entry into the F Zero franchise. And what a way to get introduced — by throwing you in the middle of a chaotic track with 98 other people striving for victory.

After Nintendo announced their latest entry into their “- 99” series, F Zero 99 has been taking players by storm. With everyone eyeing for a podium finish, winning in F Zero 99 might be harder than your average race. We’re going to buckle up and figure out how to win in F Zero 99.

At its core, F Zero 99 is a battle of attrition, not a battle of speed. This might sound counterintuitive in a racing game, but with F Zero 99, staying alive is just as important as going fast. Furthermore, if you want to win in F Zero 99, you’ll need to take advantage of spin attacks, skyways, and super sparks.

In F Zero 99, players have an energy meter that they’ll need to manage. If you lose all your energy, your car will explode and you’ll be out of the race. What’s more, if you perform a spin attack next to an opponent, you’ll get a small speed boost and reduce that person’s energy level.

By utilizing Jump Plates on certain tracks, which refill your spin attack, players can deal massive damage to enemy cars around them. There are a total of 4 different cars for players to choose from. And while all of them have pros and cons, Nintendo did a great job at making them all feel pretty even in terms of stats and abilities.

So try changing up what you race in to get the best results possible. Finally, you want to make sure you take advantage of Skyways, which is an alternate track above the current one. When you perform a spin attack on enemies, you’ll earn super sparks and these super sparks will let you access the skyway. You will be able to earn even more sparks by periodically finding the golden ship and bouncing off of it.

Of course, if you’re just looking to boost your rating, there are other ways of doing so without outright winning the whole race.

Of course, if you win the whole race (or place on the podium), you’ll earn a decent amount of a ratings boost. However, the game implores a rival system that players can use to raise their rating without winning the race. At the start of each race, players will be assigned around 4 different players who are their rivals. If you knock these people out of the race entirely, you’ll earn yourself a nice ratings boost and get yourself one step closer to a race victory.

Having said that, you shouldn’t try and knock a rival out at the expense of losing the entire race. As tempting as it would be, you want to try mixing KOing rivals while maintaining a good position in the overall race. You’ll want to maintain an aggressive racing style, make use of the skyways when applicable, and always look to pick up some free energy by the pit lanes if you’re ever running low. Who knows, with enough practice, you could even rival the great Deathborn.
