Best Build for Using Crossbow in Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3)

How can anyone attack you, when they've got a Bear and a Rat in their face at all times.

Part of what makes Baldur’s Gate 3 an enjoyable experience is the amount of variety in weapon choices. Where most games would only have one type of bow and arrow, Baldur’s Gate 3 has a myriad of different bows, and even an array of crossbows. Crossbows provide many bonuses and subsets of features that no other weapons have. This can then be min/maxed by making select choices from the beginning of your character creation. We’re going to start a new game and figure out the best build using crossbow in Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3).

There are a few different types of crossbows you should be aware of before starting your game. Players can find Light Crossbows, Heavy Crossbows, and Hand Crossbows throughout the game. We’re going to be running a Drow Ranger/Rogue multiclass for this build. And if you want your main focus to be crossbows, Hand Crossbows provide the most amount of damage and benefit for this type of build when combined with class features such has Two-Weapon Fighting. Our reasoning behind these choices is due to the fact that Ranger and Rogue have a bunch of passives and features that allow you to perform multiple attacks per turn.

Another important feature of this build is going to be the subclass choices for both Ranger and Rogue. You’ll want to go ahead and run Beast Master/Thief for each subclass respectively, due to their abilities to create friendly targets for enemies to attack instead of you. Plus, being a thief allows many actions to help sneak you out of a tight situation, should there be too many enemies around you. Next, players should focus their stats primarily on Dexterity and Intelligence. Just make sure to reach at least level 5 on Ranger before multiclassing with Rogue. If you do this, with the right party setup, you’ll be able to perform at least 3-4 attacks per turn by the time you reach act 2.
