In a D&D campaign, there’s always room for more villains. While most people are worried for the sake of the people and want to be the heroes of the land, maybe you want to be the antithesis. Perhaps burning an imaginary world to ashes is just what you need. If this sounds like something you would want to do, then Baldur’s Gate 3 has you covered. Creating a harbinger of chaos is not as easy as you think, and deciding where your character came from matters greatly. Before you even crash your first Nautiloid, choosing the right traits can put you on the right track to brimstone and hellfire. So let’s enter the mind and take a look at the best background for villain playthrough in Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3).
Best Background for Villain Playthrough in Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3)
Backgrounds play a pivotal role in the long and arduous journey you will embark on in BG3. Along with affecting what proficiencies a character has, backgrounds have two features that come along with them. These are what give you multiple bonuses on certain dice rolls, and NPCs in the world will react differently based on your past. What’s more, BG3 actually reacts to the things you do in the game relative to your background. If you act or say things within what your background is, you’ll obtain Inspiration Points, which you can use to re-roll failed dice rolls.

When playing as a villain in BG3, you’ll want to make sure you choose a background that’s in line with evil skills such as Deception and Persuasion. If you decide to go with the ‘origin villain’ of the game, a.k.a. The Dark Urge, your background will be chosen automatically as the Haunted One. A background that will help you with Arcana and Medicine, which can be helpful if you’re looking to follow the pre-determined path of darkness. However, if you are looking to make a name for your own character, you’ll want to go with the Charlatan or Noble background. This is due to the fact that Charlatan has proficiencies in Deception and Sleight of Hand, while Noble has History and Persuasion. Each of these skills will help you carve a path to doomsday for the residents of Baldur’s Gate.
