A big part of what makes free-to-play games go ‘round is a litany of different currencies. If you want certain stuff, you gotta pay the right kinda dough. It ain’t especially pleasant, but hey, that’s the nature of the beast. Case in point, if you want Heirloom items in Apex Legends, you’re gonna have to cough up quite a few Heirloom Shards. Here’s how to get Heirloom Shards in Apex Legends.
Heirloom items are one of the rarest kinds of cosmetic items in all of Apex Legends, including viewable weapon skins, intro quips, and swanky poses. Legendary-tier items are chump change compared to these puppies. Of course, fitting such classy duds, they are extremely difficult to obtain, to put it very nicely. In the first place, you can’t just get Heirloom items, at least outside of designated special events. To obtain an Heirloom item, you need to offer up 150 Heirloom Shards, and the only way to get Heirloom Shards is from opening Apex Packs. Hope you’ve got your credit card handy.
How to Get Heirloom Shards in Apex Legends
Apex Packs, the game’s lootbox system, can be obtained by leveling up your profile, ranking up your battle pass, and of course, buying them in bulk from the in-game store. Every time you crack open an Apex Pack, there’s a chance it’ll contain a cache of Heirloom Shards. One cache contains 50 shards, so you’ll need three to obtain an Heirloom Item. There is a chance that all three slots of your Apex Pack could contain Heirloom Shards, but the odds of that are around 0.2%, so maybe don’t hold your breath.
In a spot of good-ish news, though, Apex Legends does have a built-in mercy system for obtaining Heirloom Shards. Out of every 500 Apex Packs you open, you are guaranteed to receive at least one full set of Heirloom Shards. For every Pack you open, your odds gradually improve from 1/500 up to 1/1. So if you happen to have $500 you’re not using, you can buy enough packs to get an Heirloom item right away! Yay!
Other than cracking packs, major in-game events will occasionally feature Heirloom Packs that you can earn from completing collection events, as was the case during the Anniversary Event back in February. At time of writing, there are no events of that nature running, but keep your eyes peeled around the Summer and holiday seasons.
