Hogwarts Legacy: Can You Buy Clothes for Deek? Answered

Could we at least get him a fresh pillowcase?

In Hogwarts Legacy, Deek is a house-elf you meet over the course of the main story who teaches you how to use the Nab-Sack to rescue wild magical beasts from poachers. He’s a nice fellow, and it’s understandable that you’d be fond of him after a while. In this case, you’re probably wondering if you can buy clothes for Deek in Hogwarts Legacy.

Unfortunately, the answer to that question is no. You can’t purchase any clothes specifically for Deek, nor do you have any means of customizing his appearance (things like game mods notwithstanding).

There is a reason for this rooted in the established lore of the Wizarding World. See, house-elves are stalwartly subservient to their masters or employers and completely beholden to their desires. The only way to free them from their servitude is to present them with clothes of their own to replace the old pillowcases they usually wear. If Deek were released from his servitude and ran off somewhere, that’d kind of mess up the progression of the story.

Additionally, it’s a rule that only a house-elf’s master can present them with clothes and set them free. Deek’s just your friend, not your servant; he’s an employee of Hogwarts first and foremost, and the two of you only meet because he was doing a favor for Professor Weasley. Ergo, even if you could buy clothes for Deek, you don’t really have the right to give them to him, and he probably wouldn’t accept them.

It’s unfortunate that you can’t do something nice for a friendly character, but that’s just kind of how the whole house-elf thing works, sadly. You can still do him favors and such, though, and you should, because he’s a nice guy.
