How to Get Better Aim in VALORANT

Time, effort, and persistence.

Figuring out how to get better aim in VALORANT has been a hot topic since the game’s release at this point. While a lot of players tend to overvalue how important your aim is, there’s no denying that it is a big part of improving at the game. So, getting better aim in VALORANT is vital to ranking up, regardless of if you’re Silver, Diamond, or Immortal.

I’m going to run you through how I improved my aim in VALORANT. I came from console when I started playing, so my aim was worse than most keyboard and mouse players regardless of rank. The strategies I used to improve my aim carried me from Silver to Ascendant in two acts, so everything I talk about here is very much tried and tested.

Out of every possible factor affecting your aim in VALORANT, I would argue the most important is your settings. You can do all the training you want, but if you’re not using consistent settings, you’re wasting your time.

I’m sure we’re all guilty of it – changing our sensitivity or crosshair daily depending on whether or not we’re playing badly. While you might feel that works in the short term – it’s killing your consistency in the long run.

I’ve been playing with the same sensitivity and crosshair for months at this point – and that’s what you should be aiming for, too.

Of course, you need to find a crosshair and sensitivity that suits you before you can put time into them. Once you do, though, don’t switch – no matter how much you might want to.

Controlling Your Mental

Once you’re confident that you’ve got the right crosshair and sensitivity for you, the next thing I want you to drill into your head is to manage your mental.

Managing your mental is useful beyond simply improving your aim. It’ll improve your gameplay overall, and let you enjoy the game a bit more than usual (most of the time).

What do I mean by mental, though? If you’ve never heard the term before, here’s a quick explanation:

  • Your mental in VALORANT refers to your mindset and mood. It’s about keeping a positive outlook and not letting yourself get angry – or go on tilt. It’s common knowledge that playing while angry affects both your decision-making abilities, as well as your aim. As a result, you play worse, resulting in you getting even angrier.

This ends up trapping you in a nasty cycle that can cause you to burn out incredibly quickly. So, managing your mental is key to improving both your aim and general skill. So, how do you do that?

There are a few ways to manage your mental, and not everything works for everyone. You know your own head better than I do. Here’s what I do to manage my own mental, so take this information and apply it to yourself.

  • Don’t play more than two competitive games per day: I’ve found that my peak performance comes from my first two games. After that, my performance drops off dramatically. This results in me getting frustrated and wanting to play more to redeem myself – so it’s better to avoid that altogether.
  • Take a break after every game I play: Whether it’s a coffee break or just for some fresh air, get yourself away from the monitor and get your body stretching. This will help you stay fresh whenever you end up coming back for your next game.
  • Don’t take it personally: This applies to both teammates and enemies. VALORANT players are toxic – ignore them. As hard as it is, if someone is flaming or raging, just blank them and do your thing. Don’t let their bad mental affect yours.

Manage your mood in VALORANT, and you’ll notice it makes a massive difference in your aim.

Train, Train, Train

So, with the little (but important) stuff out of the way – it’s time to talk about what you’re all here. Whether you like it or not, aiming in VALORANT is a hard skill. Despite what certain YouTubers might tell you, there’s no magic secret to improving your aim overnight. You need to treat it like any other skill and train it.

There are a few ways to do that – playing the game is one of them. However, as I said in the how to manage mental section, you don’t want to play the game too much. So, how do you get that all-important practice in without grinding the game? Routine.

Building a training routine is critical to improving your aim in VALORANT. Different routines work for different people, but there are a few core components that everyone should include.

First, and somewhat controversially, is aim trainers. There are a lot of players out there that don’t like aim trainers. I’m not one of them. I swear by Aim Lab’s ability to help players improve their aim, especially as someone who came to tactical FPS on PC from competitive COD on console.

You don’t have to use Aim Lab, but you should be using some sort of third-party aim trainer, especially if you’re not a native mouse and keyboard player. This will help you master your mouse, and by extension – your aim.

As well as an aim trainer, make sure you’re spending time warming up in the practice range and in deathmatch before you jump into competitive. Generally, 10 minutes or so in the range and one or two deathmatches are more than enough, provided you stay consistent. Even if you don’t plan on playing comp, try to get your training routine in.

Do this for a few weeks, and I guarantee you that your aim will improve.
