How to Get Sponges in Minecraft

Unfortunately, Sponges cannot be crafted in Minecraft; making Sponges craftable would make obtaining them far too easy! Sponges are far too valuable to be obtained easily, so if you want to get your hands on some Sponges in survival Minecraft, get ready for a road trip or two.

Sponges are extremely rare blocks that can only be found underwater in Ocean Monuments. Ocean Monuments are rare structures that spawn deep below the ocean’s surface, so if you find one, be sure to grab a Water Breathing potion or a Respiration-enchanted helmet before you go exploring. Once you’ve found an Ocean Monument (you can just grab a boat and go ocean-exploring to locate one), follow these steps to get your Sponges in Minecraft:

  • Swim down to the Ocean Monument with a potion of Water Breathing or a helmet enchanted with Respiration (you’ll need it).
  • Explore the various rooms within the Monument. There should be at least one room containing one or more Sponges inside.
  • Once you find the Sponges inside the Monument, collect every single one of them that you can see.
    • Sponges don’t take long at all to mine underwater, you won’t even need an Aqua Affinity enchantment!
  • Once you’ve collected all the naturally-spawning Sponges, locate the Elder Guardians within the Monument and defeat them. They should drop one Wet Sponge once defeated.
    • Elder Guardians are difficult to kill, but they’re totally worth the effort!

What are Sponges Used for in Minecraft?

Ever since their addition in 2009, Sponges have remained some of the most elusive blocks in Minecraft. These rare blocks are essential for builders and regular Minecraft players alike, there’s no other block in Minecraft that does what they do!

Sponges can absorb up to 42 blocks of water (up to 7 blocks in all 6 surrounding directions), which turns them into Wet Sponges. You can then use the Wet Sponges to transport the water (no bucket needed!) anywhere you want in the game. Sponges are perfect for building underwater bases, or just for transporting any pesky bodies of water that you don’t want!
