The mode will return in WWE 2K23 but according to recent interviews from the past few weeks, the mode will be receiving a much-needed facelift. In this guide, we’ll share all of the changes so far to Universe Mode in WWE 2K23.

Since WWE 2K16, Universe Mode has essentially had the same foundation. With WWE 2K23, it seems like the developers at Visual Concepts are shaking things up this year. In an interview following the announcement of WWE 2K23, WWE 2K Creative Director Lynell Jinks spoke about the difficulty of changing Universe Mode: “How we build MyRise, and now even in Showcase is built on one set of tools. Universe was completely different. It was still this very difficult system to work with and edit – it was just hard to add anything new to it because it was so fragile.”

He would go on to say that Universe Mode in WWE 2K23 was now built on the same foundation as MyRise, opening up a new world of possibilities. Now, players have the option of choosing what happens before or even after matches in the mode. You can have the wrestler you’re playing as shake hands with their opponent before a match or attack them.

This week, Jinks explained more about the changes to Universe Mode in another interview. Here he details a rivalry featuring the new changes in the Classic Mode portion of Universe, which is more like a sandbox mode. He also mentions that the Superstar Mode portion of Universe will experience these changes but it will be different. Since Superstar Mode allows you to control only one wrestler as opposed to any wrestler, you’ll make decisions for the wrestler you’re controlling while the AI will have its own list of possible decisions to make, which are hidden from the player.
