Will Star Wars Commander Come Back?

Could Star Wars: Commander ever return from the grave?

Though there aren’t too many Star Wars titles on gaming consoles or PC aside from the LEGO Star Wars or Battlefront ones, as of late, the mobile landscape of gaming has had quite a few Star Wars games enter the digital libraries since the mid-2010s. One such game was Star Wars: Commander, a free strategy game that allowed players to take control of either the Rebel Alliance or Empire.

Getting to take control of their favorite factions of the Star Wars galaxy and running things the way that they’d like to was quite a wonderful and immersive thing for gamers. It was a long-running title that’s longevity allowed it to operate from August 23 of 2014 through June 12 of 2020. Though it’s been a while since the game had been discontinued, could we see it come back anytime soon? Let’s talk about it!

Will Star Wars Commander Come Back?

Though the game was shut down just over two years ago, it doesn’t seem likely for this game, specifically, to ever return from the grave the same way it left. Star Wars: Commander was shut down and when it comes to any title in the gaming realm of Star Wars when it’s shut down, that means that it is dead for good in a coffin with a stake driven through its heart and buried a mile underground.

That doesn’t mean that we won’t see some other kind of incarnation of this game though. After all, the Battlefront was rebooted, kind of. The gameplay has never been the same as the originals and it’s easy to see that the modern ones in no way feel the same as the old ones did. But there is a chance that this game could be rebooted, though it’s important to keep your expectations at bay, as any new version of Commander would be a completely new thing from the original.

I’d say that any kind of strategy game for Star Wars whether it be Commander or something by a new name entirely is completely on the table. Disney has been more experimental with the Star Wars IP over the last few years, allowing for more publishers and developers to use it, after EA and DICE’s fumble with the Battlefront games.

As it stood in 2020 after the game closed, players were still able to play the game via Facebook Gameroom but that has recently been squashed as you can no longer download the app from Facebook, and even if you have it downloaded or find it elsewhere online, the servers don’t connect which renders it a lost cause. All players can do right now is hold out hope that Disney and Star Wars eventually decide to release a new Star Wars: Commander or a clone for it to ever get another chance.
