Why Does Overwatch 2 Require a Phone Number?

Find out how Blizzard is improving player behavior

Next week is the launch of the long-awaited Overwatch 2. Since its initial announcement in 2019, the game has undergone several changes as it has evolved from sharing space with the original Overwatch to becoming a standalone free-to-play title that replaces it. One of the biggest differences between Overwatch 2 and its predecessor is how player behavior is handled. This initiative is being referred to as the Defense Matrix. Part of the Defense Matrix requires players to list their phone number. In this guide, we’ll tell you why.

The Defense Matrix in Overwatch 2

As part of the new Defense Matrix initiative, Blizzard will be using SMS Protect to verify account ownership and prevent banned players from easily returning. This means that Overwatch 2 players will be required to enter their phone number in order to play the game. This change will take place on October 4 when Overwatch 2 launches. A phone number can only be used once and can’t be used with multiple accounts. VOIP and pre-paid numbers cannot be used. With this system in place, Blizzard hopes to reduce toxic behavior among players and make the game safer to play for everyone.
