One of the new features for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet is the new Tera Raid Battles. In the last few generations, new Pokemon games have taken to make encountering Pokemon more interesting. If you’re wondering how these new raid battles work and what they entail, we’ll give you all the details there are. In Pokemon Sheild and Sword, these were called Max Raid Battles using the Dynamax feature from the game. In Scarlet and Violet, a new ability called Terestalizing causes Tera Raid Battles. This is what tera raid battles are in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet.
What is Terallizing?
Terastalizing is a new method of battle in Pokemon. Pokemon now have the ability once per battle to transform. They are still the same Pokemon, this is not an evolution. However, the terastal transformation causes them to either heighten the power of whatever type they become.
These new forms are called “Tera Types”. Some pokemon change their Tera Type completely and become a new type that attacks you’re used to using no longer affect them. Others can keep their usual types but become even more powerful than before.

What are Tera Raid Battles?
You can find sparkling beams of light coming from different color crystals across the Paldea region. Going to these crystals and touching them will start a Tera Raid Battle. You can battle the Pokemon alone with AI help or with your friends. Each Raid Battle is different and can be unpredictable. They can feature very rare and unique pokemon or just more powerful common pokemon found in that area. There are levels 1-7 measuring in both uniqueness and power of the pokemon you are battling.
Unlike Pokémon Sword & Shield, Tera Raid Battles are more random and the pokemon you encounter is not always set or predictable. The Tera Type of the pokemon can also be random.
You can even battle super powerful unique pokemon at extremely high levels in live events through mystery gifts that Nintendo will be released throughout the next several months.
Tera raid battles can be very random but also exciting for this reason! You can theoretically run into any powerful and unique pokemon in the game that’s not a Legendary or storyline Pokemon. Just like raid battles from Pokemon Go and Sword and Sheild, you just have to defeat them and capture them and your new Terastal pokemon is yours!
