What Was the Answer to Brok’s Riddle in God of War Ragnarök?

No, you are crying.

There are a lot of mysteries and secrets that were answered in God of War Ragnarök, but there are some that have raised a lot of questions, and we can only hope for a sequel, since we can’t have enough God of War. One of the questions that are apparently left unanswered in the game is the riddle presented by one of our loved Huldra brothers, Brok. What was the answer to Brok’s riddle in God of War Ragnarök? Let’s find out. Major spoilers ahead.

What Was the Answer to Brok’s Riddle?

While Mimir will try to solve the riddle throughout all the game’s duration, even making room for some funny interactions between the main characters, the marriage between comedy, melancholy and straight up grief is what makes this riddle so important and even a thin line that will connect all the events in the game. You see, while the original intent of Brok when asking the riddle was to mess with the so-called “smartest man in the world” Mimir, its new meaning will break our hearts when we experience Tyr’s deception.

You see, when we save Tyr at the beginning of the game, we were actually falling to one of the All-Father’s tricks of impersonation. When Brok tries to confront the fake Tyr, Odin sticks a knife in the chest of Brok, killing him definitely. And I say definitely because, as an added ingredient to the tragic tale of the Huldra brothers, Brok died once before, only to be revived by Sindri by saving his soul, although a part of it remained behind, the one that brings direction it.

A Riddle of Grief

We don’t get the answer to Brok’s riddle in the game, but we do in the post-game. It is effectively the game’s true ending. We visit Svartalfheim one more time to attend Brok’s funeral. Sindri attends too, albeit still wronged and mad by the events that happened during Rangarök. The funeral concludes, with Sindri still angry and not willing to listen to Kratos’ words. Then Mimir says “a hole“, “What gets bigger the more you take away from it?”. It is only when Brok is bidden farewell when Mimir understands the solution to Brok’s riddle. And it makes sense.

A “hole” could only be the answer to the riddle, but it also represents the hole in Brok’s soul. But ultimately, a “hole” is a great explanation of what we fill when we mourn a loved one’s passing. It is the hole in Atreus and Kratos when they go to Midgard. They hunt when they cannot focus or understand their grief. And it is certainly the hole in Sindri’s heart, being the one that has lost the most in the game. He acts hostile to everyone, while being unable to control his inner struggle.

With the revelation of Brok’s riddle answer, the game ends and cuts to the credits. It is the only time that the game’s continuous shot is interrupted. It really leaves an impact on us players that have related to the characters of the Norse chapter of God of War. We can only hope that Sindri will eventually heal from this trauma, and so do we.
