Legends mode is one such way to exploring the world, as if a scholar reading ancient records. You do not play with the world with your dwarves, but with your imagination. Here is an explanation to the Legends mode in Dwarf Fortress.
What is legends mode in Dwarf Fortress?
You can think of Legends mode as if the entire recorded history of your generated world. Because that is exactly what it is. Whether you generated your world for 25 years or 1,000 years, the Legends mode will display everything that happened across every single year. Every historical figure, every location, every beast, every structure and even every important item.

You can browse the menus, reading the fate of the figures and what they got up to. The history will span until the present day of the world, which is when you would be embarking on your own adventure or starting your fortress.
You can click on the coloured texts to be brought down rabbit holes of history and tales and you read on and on. In the classic version, maps of locations were also available which the premium versions do not yet have.
If ever you abandon your fortress, you can access the legends mode for that world, and all of the history will be up to date, so anything notable that your civilization did will be recorded. So when you embark of another adventure or start another fort, you will be making even more history.
