What Are Pokemon Scarlet and Violet Starter Evolution Types?

Bigger Pokes, better types.

In the majority of Pokemon generations, the three starter Pokemon always start out as Water, Grass, and Fire types, but pick up a secondary type upon reaching maturity. These secondary types influence the kind of moves they can use and their team viability, so it’s good to know them before you commit to a Starter. So what are the Pokemon Scarlet and Violet Starter evolution types?

What Are Pokemon Scarlet and Violet Starter Evolution Types?

In Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, your choice of Starter Pokemon, and their respective types, are as follows:

  • Quaxly: Water
  • Sprigatito: Grass
  • Fuecoco: Fire

All three of these Pokemon maintain their pure typing into their second evolved forms. However, once they reach their final forms, they pick up their secondary typing, which both adds and removes resistances and allows them to learn new moves.

Fully-Evolved Typings

The evolutionary lines of the Starter Pokemon, and the types that they pick up, are as follows:

  • Quaxly evolves into Quaxwell, remains pure Water. Quaxwell evolves into Quaquaval, becomes a Water/Fighting type.
  • Sprigatito evolves into Floragato, remains pure Grass, Floragato evolves into Meowscarada, becomes a Grass/Dark type.
  • Fuecoco evolves into Crocalor, remains pure Fire. Crocalor evolves into Skeledirge, becomes a Fire/Ghost type.

Interestingly, these particular type combinations create some shake-ups with the usual rock-paper-scissors layout of Starter Pokemon. Skeledirge’s partial Ghost typing, for instance, offsets its Fire type weakness to Quaquaval by making it immune to Fighting type moves. However, it also gives it a new weakness to Meowscarada, since Ghost types are weak to Dark moves.

Every Starter Pokemon has its ups and downs, so make sure to think long and hard about which one you want. Or just pick whichever one looks cutest to you, that works too.
