Talks and topics on anything relating to the Xbox Series X and S seem to be few and far between what with the current landscape favouring the Nintendo Switch and even the PlayStation 4 still. Xbox Series X/S goers should not feel squandered however considering the sheer amount of choice that they have, both in newer releases and with its backwards compatibility feature. Here’s a rundown of our favourite anime themed games that you can discover and enjoy on said console.

Persona 5 Royal

At this point it is a given that if you are seeking anime games on any platform or console, you will have already run into Persona 5. Originally released in 2016 in Japan, worldwide in 2017, and the enhanced version here with Persona 5 Royal on the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S in October 2022, its fifth entry within the franchise popularised it to mainstream attention and acclaim.

Persona 5 Royal is a must play for any RPG fan. You probably have already done so, in fact, considering its many unique selling points from its style, loveable and wide cast and sheer polish and amount of content to seep over 120 hours into.

SCARLET NEXUS

SCARLET NEXUS is an action RPG that spawned its own anime after its release within 2021. Players experience two different stories to piece together its puzzling world, that of a futuristic, Cyberpunk-esque setting and scenario where people have latent psychic abilities. In this open world sci-fi, action packed adventure, its dual story penned by the writers of Tales of Vesperia is thoroughly intriguing and immersive.

NieR: Automata

Here is another one you will almost certainly already know about. As a modern masterpiece of a video game, NieR: Automata is readily available to play no matter the platform or console these days. In this post-apocalyptic action RPG that changes up its gameplay ranging from shoot ’em ups and platformers, NieR: Automata delights in its masterful storytelling and unique charms. As part of the Nier and Drakengard universes created by the auteur director Yoko Taro, you know its worth immediately.

Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 4

The Naruto IP has had a fantastic run for its video game adaptations, best expressed in the Ultimate Ninja Storm series. Topped off with its last and latest instalment of its fourth entry in 2016, it is arguably the greatest fighter arena franchise to come out of any adaptation of an anime and manga IP. Encompassing the conclusion of the anime with its stunning visuals, revamped battle system and grand boss fights, CyberConnect2 hits it out of the ballpark with this one.

Attack On Titan 2: Final Battle

Video games based on Attack on Titan are few and far between, especially for how much of an international hit the series is. Luckily, fans of both the anime and manga can thank Koei Tecmo for creating one of the most satisfying titan exterminating games possible. Following the events of the anime up to season three with your very own customisable player character, Koei Tecmo’s take on the series offers hours upon hours of mindless fun in its hack and slash, objective based missions, character bond levelling up and a huge roster to play as in its side modes.

Star Ocean: The Divine Force

Star Ocean: The Divine Force marks the most free-roaming the series has ever been, and for a space bound adventure, that’s only one reason as to why it delivers. With the very best of its unique battle system also being implemented here in Devil May Cry style and finesse, the title is beautiful in its sci-fi fantasy blend in its exploration segments with its combat heavy run-ins never getting stale. It’s a sight to behold and a joy to experience.

Tales of Arise

Bringing the very best of the series’ staples in its Artes system and stunningly vibrant visuals across the board, Tales of Arise is a top tier JRPG that looks at the grander scheme of things for a change for its genre. Revolving around a plotline concerning revolution, prejudice and freedom, Tales of Arise takes its players on a journey filled with delightful level and character designs, a satisfying gameplay loop of increasing complexity and a world worth returning to time and time again.

Forgotten Anne

While coming from an indie developer based in Denmark, ThroughLine Games’ engrossing and narratively fantastic little gem of a game with Forgotten Anne takes many inspirations from the likes of Studio Ghibli. Bringing together motifs such as steampunk, fairy-tale and fantasy, Forgotten Anne looks and feels familiarly warm and comforting whilst presenting a fresh and new story embedded in a side-scrolling platformer. Cosy, inspiring and timeless, Forgotten Anne is one to be remembered and cherished for years to come.

Closing the list out is with the remastered version of the All Star Battle video game series adaptation of Hirohiko Araki’s manga, originally from 2014. Consisting of over 50 characters from the beloved manga series across the entirety of its numerous arcs with five game modes and presented in an arena fighter suitable to both fans and newcomers to the franchise, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure All-Star Battle R never stops being fun.

Rather than forcing a tenth spot in place here, we will update the piece to make it into a top ten once we really get into 2023 because this year is already kicking off to a promising start with One Piece Odyssey. Likewise, there will also be both Story Of Seasons: A Wonderful Life and Mato Anomalies releasing, both which invokes a more than suitable style to fit our list. It’s a promising time to be partial to an anime-esque video game.
