The Unliving: Basic Minion Strategy Guide

It's all about sacrifice.

Being a Necromancer, raising an army of the undead in order to do your bidding and get rid of all living beings in the worlds is something that only feels natural (within all the unnatural nature of the task). Having said that, The Unliving presents several mechanics and abilities that will forge the way you’re going to have to approach several instances and enemies during the game. No, going gun’s blazing with the intention to take names and kicking you-know-whats is not the way you’re going to be successful in this game. Rather than that, you will see all your undead army become, well, un-undead? Anyway, the thing is, you need some strategy while taking advantage of all you have at your disposal. Here is a basic minion strategy guide for The Unliving.

So, besides being able to cast spells and use your Hex Weapons, there are two ways you can use your minions. One way is to raise the dead and recruit them for your army and ordering them to attack your enemy. The other way is the ability to sacrifice your troops. This will be the focus of our strategy guide. Now, you’re probably wondering: but sacrificing your enemies isn’t something negative? Well, not necessarily.

The reason this is a must-do in this game is because each enemy, when sacrificed, will have an effect that could change the outcome of a battle. This includes ranged attacks, explosions and many more effects. The other alternative you have is to let your enemies be killed or die by rot. So, go ahead and exchange a little of your lifespark (sacrificing is essentially a spell) and sacrifice your enemies when you need them. Here is a little guide based on this premise for each kind of minion. Note: their looks and abilities lightly vary between each location, but essentially they remain the same.

  • Fighters: you could see them as your cannon fodder. However, the peasants (and their equivalents) have the ability to explode (while the hounds stuns the enemy) when sacrificed. So if you find your fighters in the middle of an enemy populated area or against barricades, sacrifice them and use them as bombs. Think about the uruk-hai that destroyed the walls of Helm’s Deep. That’s your minions.
  • Ranged: my favorite type of minion. Basically, when sacrificed, ranged minions will throw a projectile that will either affect an area, or, my favorite, throw a special arrow-like projectile that will bypass any barricade and kill the enemies that it encounters in it straight-line direction. I suggest sacrificing ranged minions whenever you like. Really, they are very OP. Use them specially when under severe pressure and when trying to destroy some barricades to get rid of the minions behind them.
  • Giants: the brutes/tanks of The Unliving. Let them wreak havoc, and when they’re about to die, sacrifice them. Personally, they’re sacrifice effect aren’t much powerful as the other. The only situation you could use their sacrifice ability is when you found yourself surrounded. Their ability is to pull all the enemies around like a black hole and then deal severe damage.
  • Unholy: here are the special type of undead. They will be able to deal a lot of damage or provide support. Sacrifice them whenever necessary. For example, the priests will be able to heal you and your troops, and werewolves will howl and make your enemies fight with each other (use this when you’re about to lose a battle or when there’s a huge army of foes).

With that being said, now you know the basics of how to be a successful Necromancer and undead general in The Unliving. Go ahead and raise the undead and destroy everything in your path (by sacrificing your minions).
