Sons of the Forest is the latest early access success story in PC gaming. A direct sequel to The Forest, it adds many new features and mechanics that dedicated fans should know about. One of these new mechanics is friendly NPCs. Their main goal is to support players throughout the whole game. We’ve done our research and have an answer for which companion is better.

Kelvin
Kelvin is the companion who you start the game with. He’s sitting right next to you in the helicopter before it crashes! You and Kelvin are the only survivors on the island. Since he is mute and deaf you need to communicate with him via notepad. His disability doesn’t make him any less of a powerhouse, though. Kelvin will haul and scavenge for anything. What makes him different from Virginia is he has the ability to take commands, but in return he cannot fight. Make sure you protect him though, followers can die!
Virginia
Virginia is the companion you can get who already lives on the island. Note her three legs and arms! That doesn’t make her any less of a great companion to have with you though. She will remain on the beach areas and the less shaded areas of the island generally. Once you become friendly with her, she will assist you for as long as you need. What makes Virginia different from Kelvin is her ability to fight back the waves of cannibals who are coming to kill you. She can’t take orders like Kelvin though. But the trade-off for protection vs gathering may be worth it for some players.
Now, who’s the best companion overall? Nobody essentially. But if you want to get into the nitty-gritty of it you could say that each companion serves a specific role. Kelvin is great to have if you are a player who is more focused on exploring and combat. Virginia is great to have to protect you if you are focused on crafting and gathering. Since the game is in early access there may come a time when Kelvin and Virginia behave even more differently. Pick whoever fits your play style the most and try to enjoy your time on the island!
