Should You Kill Dr. Kronenberg in Jagged Alliance 3? – How to Cure Red Rabies

Since when did this become a horror game?

The Sanatorium houses a different kind of video game inside its walls. The Doctor is getting up to all kinds of mischief trying to solve the cause and negate the effects of the Red Rabies curse that appears to be sweeping the area and transforming everyone into zombies. In the midst of war against humanity and against all odds, a new virus has plagued the island housing the Sanatorium. As hope is dwindling down to baseless prayers and evacuation, Dr. Kronenberg stays behind to conduct her horrifying experiments and arrive to any conclusion she can to find the cure to this rampant disease. But by entering the Sanatorium walls, your squad has their arms twisted and their lives placed on a timer to find the Red Rabies cure. Whether or not you want to do this is up to you but, this is Vincent’s guide on the best course of action against the Doctor herself. Do you kill the Doctor or try to find the cure in Jagged Alliance 3?

How to Find the Red Rabies Cure in Jagged Alliance 3

The Doctor of the Sanatorium has an incredibly important task for players to complete – find the cure for Red Rabies. With a total of 6 samples to collect (depending on the difficulty), you may find the 10 day timer to feel a little overwhelming as your search could lead you down a wild goose chase across the Grand Chien. Because of this, we actually recommend putting off your visit to the Sanatorium so that the quest does not begin before you want it to. This will get you infinite amount of time to explore the island that Sanatorium resides on where the samples you need to collect could be found before the quest even begins.

You can also use this time to fight and defeat any enemies across the island so that when the time comes to search for the samples, you can find them with ease as opposed to rushing around and trying to clear areas on a timer. You want to make sure that you do not ignore this quest if you have already started it, it is key to getting a better ending in Jagged Alliance and whilst the Doctor will remain in the Sanatorium waiting for you and the samples, the time to complete the quest will be long gone and the cure cannot be found.

Where to Find the Red Rabies Samples

Depending on which difficulty you are on will determine the amount of samples you need to collect to complete the quest. However, this guide will outline every step you need to take along with the location of each sample. With every sample, we highly recommend either using multiple squads and sending them out to the correct areas (after clearing the relevant areas first before starting the quest), or choose to only use one squad with a Merc that has high Medical Training (80+). All squads should have high Medical Skills however, so that they can find the samples with ease. Some sectors require different Skills such as Explosives or Strength, so be aware of that before you head to one of the areas listed below.

  • Twin Manors (L18) – solve the murder/ persuade Dr. L’Enger or use the Trait Loner to get the sample.
  • Chalet de la Paix (F13) – Find Wilcox’s room inside the camp and speak to Xavier at the docks. Head to the bar which will take you to Wanda. All of this will lead you directly to the west side of the forest where 3 statues stand and the journal relevant to the quest can be found. Return to Wanda, speak to Hog Lady to find the final journal page. Head back to the Doctor of Chalet de la Paix where a battle will ensue. Upon defeating the enemies you will be able to find the sample on Wilcox’s body.
  • Wetlands (H16) – Open the box using a Merc with high Mechanical Skill. this area houses hyenas and crocodiles that you will have to face if you go here during the quest, instead of clearing the area beforehand.
  • Burial Grounds (J11) – Located at the altar, inside the buckets.
  • Grimmer Hamlet (I19) – There are zombies and civilians in this area, you need to sweep the area with a Merc that has high Strength. Each door could house either zombies or civilians inside so utilize cover so that you do not unnecessarily kill innocent people. The blood sample is obtained by clearing the quests provided by the drunk man located at the campfire.
  • Factory Ruins (K14) – In this minefield, use a Merc that has high Explosives Skill to defuse the traps laid out. The area is zombie infested with looters (if you visit here during the quest and did not clear beforehand). You will find the sample inside the small building and on the upper floor where a corpse must be inspected.

Although it is suggested to bring 4 out of 6 samples, we highly recommend finding all samples to ensure that the quest is completed.

To Cure the Doc or Let the Plague Run Rampant – That is the All-Important Question of JA3

By choosing to save the Doctor through completing her difficult task of finding all of the Red Rabies samples, you will have a total of 10 in-game days to complete the quest. This may seem like a simple task in the fact that the timer appears long but by completing other quests and runs, and placing The Outbreak Quest to the background, you may find yourself quickly running out of time.

We highly recommend leaving the Doctor alive and starting The Outbreak quest when you have the time and cannot afford to let the 10-day timer pass by. As suggested in the guide above to complete this quest, you should attempt to clear the steps before you initiate the conversation with the Doctor inside the Sanatorium so that you can go around the island once more and collect samples with ease.

The reason why it is incredibly important to complete The Outbreak quest, although it can seem unimportant and unrelated to the narrative of Jagged Alliance 3, is that it actually contributes to the story. By eradicating Red Rabies, you will receive a better ending in the game. Because of this, you should allow the Doctor to continue her experimentation where in return you will collect all samples she needs to put a stop to it all.

Regardless of what you decide, the Doctor dies anyway to the Red Rabies disease. Because of this, you may as well complete the quest to get the better ending in Jagged Alliance 3.

What decision did you make in the end? We hope this guide helped you come to the conclusion you were happy with. For more guides on Jagged Alliance or other new video game releases, see all of the latest over at our GJ guide section here. Thank you for reading this guide.
