What kind of witch/wizard do you want to become? The choice is yours.

The choices you make in Hogwarts Legacy have a greater effect on your playthrough than you might think. There are certain quests you’ll be able to take on that will allow you to learn certain spells. “In the Shadow of the Study” is one of these quest. Where you continue your journey with classmate Sebastian Sallow to learn the unforgivable curses. Without spoiling too much, there will come a point at the end of the quest where a difficult choice is presented to the player. You must consider what kind of witch/wizard you want to be, and more importantly what you are willing to do. When this quest comes to an end people will have to ask themselves: should you cast Crucio spell on Sebastian or ask him to cast it on you?

Whether you’re reading this after having already completed the quest, or you want to figure out all the choices before you make your own, spoiler warning ahead. After making your way through the quest and exploring previously unknown corridors made by Salazar Slytherin himself, you and your friends are trapped in a room. With no way of escaping, Sebastian realizes that the only way to escape is for Curcio to be cast on someone in the room.

Once you realize the situation you’re in, the player is given one of three options. You can choose to not learn the spell whatsoever, learn the spell but not cast it, and learn it and cast it on Sebastian. While it may seem like this choice won’t affect the game going forward, it has a significant amount of weight to it. By choosing the first option and not learning the spell, Sebastian will be forced to cast Crucio on you in order to leave the room. This will permanently lock you out from learning Crucio on this specific playthrough.

Depending on how you want your character to turn out, this might be exactly what you want. If you choose either of the other two options, you will learn Crucio and be able to use it after this mission. So if you want to be a stand up witch/wizard and not learn any unforgivable curses, the game does give you that option. And if you want to learn the spell but not torture your friends, Hogwarts Legacy gives you that choice as well.
