How to Sneak in Project Zomboid

How to Sneak in Project Zomboid

Nearly every imagining of the concept of zombies follows distinct rules. Sometimes they’re fast, sometimes they’re slow. Sometimes they’re magic, sometimes they’re biological. Sometimes they’re immortal, sometimes a swift kick to the shins will deal with them. Whatever imagining you’re going with, though, there is often a single constant: zombies are not very observant. Here’s how to sneak in Project Zomboid.

In the original build of Project Zomboid, players could sneak by pressing and holding the right mouse button. In more recent builds, this has been changed to the C key on your keyboard, and you don’t have to hold it. Just press C, and you’ll start sneaking until you press C again. If you’d rather it be a different button, you can change the sneak binding in the options menu.

Sneaking, obviously, makes you more difficult to detect in Project Zomboid. Your footsteps are quieter and you just have a generally reduced presence. Sneaking is a vital tool when trying to navigate large hordes of zombies; if you try to run at them head-on, firing wildly into the air, you’ll kill maybe three before you’re wrestled to the ground and devoured. It’s always better to just sneak by undetected than to start a fight you can’t finish.

As you sneak more, your sneaking skill will gradually level up. The higher your sneak skill is, the more difficult you are to detect. At its peak, you can sneak right past a horde of zombies without alerting them to your presence. Every instance of sneaking will raise your sneak skill, though it should be clarified that it only counts as “sneaking” if you’re sneaking past something hostile. If you’re just sneaking around in a safe house with nobody nearby, that’s not really sneaking so much as… squat-walking. You don’t get sneaking experience for squat-walking.
