Pokemon Scarlet and Violet Gym Types

Eight gyms, eight types.

In every single mainline Pokemon game, there are eight Pokemon Gyms scattered around the region, each headed up by a Gym Leader. All of these Gyms adhere strictly to a particular type of Pokemon, and while knowing them ahead of time isn’t required, it could be potentially beneficial. Here are the Pokemon Scarlet and Violet Gym types.

Just like in previous games, Pokemon Scarlet and Violet feature eight Gyms for you to challenge, with a Leader waiting at the top of each. Unlike in the earlier games, though, Scarlet and Violet are a little more transparent about how each Gym works. As soon as you first sign onto the Gym Challenge, you’re given a map with the general location of each Gym, as well as the type they specialize in.

Do Gym Levels Scale?

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet are more open-ended games than previous Pokemon games. As such, in a series first, there is no set order in which you need to take on the Gyms and their Leaders. If you can walk yourself all the way out to Montenevera from the start of the game, Ryme will happily take you on.

However, doing that might not be such a great idea for the simple reason that Gyms do not scale with your level or game progression. Every Gym, including both its Leaders and disciples, has a fixed level that they remain at for the whole game. This means that it is just as possible to run into a Gym that you’re vastly underleveled for as it is to run into one you’re hilariously overleveled for.

The only real constant to the Gyms’ levels is that the closer they are to the central city, Mesagoza, the lower their levels are. The Cortondo and Alfornada Gyms, for instance, may be better to take on first, while the Gyms to the east and north of the region are best saved for later.

Don’t let us tell you how to conduct your Pokemon adventure, though. If you’ve got the guts and the training chops, you can tear down the Gyms in whatever order you darn well please.
