Spiritomb Weaknesses and Counters in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl

Spiritomb Weaknesses and Counters in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl

I recently had a lengthy chat with my friends about Spiritomb, and how it always struck me as a Pokémon no one was quite sure what to do with. You had to go through an entire rigamerole with the Odd Keystone to even encounter one, but after that, it ain’t really doing much else for you. It’s got a cool premise; the PokéDex says it’s composed of 108 malevolent souls, kinda like Ermac in Mortal Kombat. Let’s shed some light on this oft-overlooked specter. Here are Spiritomb’s weaknesses and counters in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl.

Spiritomb is a Ghost/Dark type, which is a bit of an odd mashup as Ghost types are usually weak against Dark types. Of course, Ghost types are weak against other Ghost types too, so maybe it’s not that strange. This particular typing gives Spiritomb the following resistances:

  • Resistant to: Poison
  • Weak against: Fairy
  • Complete immune to: Normal, Fighting, Psychic

Since they’re literally Spiritomb’s solitary weakness, the best choice for countering a Spiritomb is a powerful Fairy type Pokémon. As far as the Sinnoh Dex goes, your best candidates for strong Fairy types would be the Gardevoir and Togekiss lines. Both Ralts and Togepi can be found in certain biomes of the Grand Underground fairly easily, and Togepi in particular doesn’t even have any level requirements for evolving. It just needs high friendship to reach Togetic, then a Shiny Stone for Togekiss.

Whether you’re using Fairy types or just Pokémon that can learn Fairy moves, the usual array will work fine against Spiritomb. Stuff like Moonblast and Play Rough will all do the job. Even if you don’t have any Fairy types on hand, Spiritomb’s base stats aren’t that impressive, so as long as you don’t use any moves it’s immune or resistant to, and the Pokémon you’re using isn’t weak against Ghost or Dark moves, pretty much anything else is on the table. Maybe people would care more about Spiritomb if they buffed those stats a bit…
