Lazarus Instrumentality is one of the most difficult dungeons in New World at the time of writing. The first major boss you’ll encounter in this expedition is Cilla, and it’s a boss that will put your group in check. Cilla has a few moves you will need to be aware of, and a few mechanics to consider if you want a clean kill. In this guide, we will give you some tips and tricks for defeating Cilla in Lazarus Instrumentality in New World.
New World The Lazarus Instrumentality – Cilla Guide
Cilla is the first major boss in The Lazarus Instrumentality, the expedition in Reekwater. There are two phases to the fight, with the second phase adding new mechanics to the fight. The battle takes place in an area where it is possible to fall off the edge into oblivion. Falling will result in permanent death, so you’ll need to watch your step and be aware of knockback moves.
Cilla moveset
Here are all of Cilla’s moves:
- Basic Attack – Cilla’s basic attack is moderate damage but has a frontal cleave. The tank should position Cilla’s back to the DPS.
- Heavy Attack – Cilla charges an enemy, pushing them back and dealing severe damage.
- Spear Throw – Cilla randomly targets an enemy and throws a spear, dealing severe damage and knockback.
- Buff Stacks – Cilla periodically gains stacking buffs that increase damage dealt and damage taken.
- Arcane Explosion – Cilla casts rings around all players that explode after five seconds, dealing severe damage.
- Energy Wave – Cilla casts a wave of energy at a random target.
- Tether – Cilla spawns a pool under a target player, dealing damage and causing any nearby player to tether to them, dealing damage over time to both players.
- Energy Orbs – Cilla spawns Energy Orbs around the map, immobilizing players who touch them for four seconds.
Here is a breakdown of each phase:
Cilla Phase 1
Phase 1 is mostly a tank and spank fight. The tank should position Cilla away from the group while melee DPS stands at her back feet. Cilla gains stacks every few seconds, which increases her damage taken and damage dealt. When the stacks reach ten and higher, she will begin dealing deadly damage to the tank.
Take note of the circle platforms around the arena. These are known as Conduits, and you will need to activate them when Cilla’s stacks go above ten. A floating orb will pop up above the circle platform, which means someone can activate the Conduit. Cilla will run to the Conduit after it is activated and reset the stacks.
The player who activates the Conduit receives a five-minute debuff that significantly increases damage taken. For that reason, the tank should not be the one activating Conduits. It is a good idea for all players other than the tank to take turns with the Conduits.
Look out for the deadly Spear Throws in phase one. Cilla will select a target at random and throw a spear at them. It can one-shot squishy players like healers and push a player off the edge due to the knockback. You can easily dodge this move with good timing.
Cilla Phase 2
Phase two begins when Cilla reaches roughly 60% health. In this phase, Cilla gains four new moves: Arcane Explosion, Energy Wave, Tether, and Energy Orbs. Arcane Explosion is cast periodically, and Cilla will spin her staff and create large purple rings around all players. The rings explode after five seconds, dealing deadly damage to anyone still inside the rings.
To effectively counter Arcane Explosion, all players should move to one side of the area. When the rings spawn, all players should move to the opposite side of the area. The explosions are a one-hit kill, so be sure to move out of them as soon as possible. Ice Gauntlet players can Ice Tomb the Arcane Explosion, but toward the end of the fight, the Arcane Explosion can still one-shot a player through Entombed.
Cilla will also cast a wave after each Arcane Explosion. The wave moves in a frontal cone toward a designated player. Wave is easily dodgeable and does anywhere between 2,000 to 4,000 damage but can do more to targets with the conduit debuff.

All things considered, the Cilla boss fight in New World is a challenging and fun encounter, with some nice rewards.
