Samus’ Morph Ball Bomb has always been more of a tool than a weapon, designed to clear out obstructions from the cramped spaces she needs to roll through, as well as give her a little extra vertical or horizontal movement. Bomb jumping has long been a cornerstone of Metroid speedrunning, but there are some distances that it simply can’t cross. Luckily, this is where the Cross Bomb comes in. Here’s how to get and use the Cross Bomb in Metroid Dread.
To obtain the Cross Bomb, you’ll need to defeat Golzuna, a boss fought in Ghavoran. You’ll be able to make your way to where Golzuna is after obtaining the Space Jump and Gravity Suit from Ferenia and Burenia, respectively.
How to Get and Use Cross Bomb in Metroid Dread
To get the Cross Bomb in Metroid Dread:
- Find Golzuna in Ghavoran after obtaining the Space Jump and Gravity Suit
- Blast Golzuna’s early forms with your beam and missiles, then attack its backside in its true form.
- After defeating Golzuna, hold R while setting a Bomb to set a Cross Bomb
Golzuna initially disguises itself as a Muzby, one of those big fleshy crab-looking things. Just blast it a few times with your beam until it mutates into a stronger form, which you can then beat by jumping over it and firing missiles into its unprotected butt. After a bit of that, it’ll mutate again, revealing Golzuna’s true form.
Golzuna is damaged in the same way as the larger Muzby, by firing Charge Beams and missiles (preferably Storm Missiles) into its unprotected butt. Whenever it turns around, just leap over it with your Space Jump. The only thing you need to watch out for are the balls and lines of light it launches, which will expand into cross-shaped beams. When the beams are about to form, jump over Golzuna to safety. Just follow the pattern to neutralize Golzuna, then blast down its main X Parasite until you can absorb it, rewarding you with the Cross Bomb.
To set a Cross Bomb, simply hold the R button when laying a regular Bomb down. The Cross Bomb has a slightly greener coloration. When it detonates, it’ll do so in a cross-shaped pattern that will destroy Bomb blocks to the left, right, up, and down. More importantly, you can use the Cross Bomb’s blast to jump over hazardous terrain even in cramped spaces. For example, you can get over a line of Pitfall Blocks by setting a Cross Bomb, moving slightly in front of it, and holding the stick in the direction you want to go right as it detonates.
