In honor of the man who started it all, the late-great John Madden has been selected to be on the cover of Madden 23. Madden was a legendary Hall of Fame coach from the early 60s into the late 70s, before serving as a color commentator for nearly 30 years in the NFL. However, younger fans might be more familiar with the popular EA title named after him simply called Madden.
With the recent news, fans are curious to know if this is the first time John Madden has ever appeared on the cover of his own game.
Has John Madden Appeared on the Cover of Madden Before?
Unfortunately, John Madden passed away on December 28th of last year, leaving behind one of the greatest legacies in sports. As a result of the impact he’s had on American football, EA has chosen to pay homage to the iconic sports personality by featuring him on the cover of Madden 23. Which is set to release later on this summer.
However, you might be surprised to learn that this isn’t the first time John Madden’s been featured on the cover of Madden. In fact, he was the cover star for the majority of the titles early on in the franchise’s development.

That being said, he hasn’t been featured on the cover of Madden in over 20 years. So, the fact that EA has chosen to bring him back over two decades later is certainly an exciting revelation.
This wasn’t the only news revealed about Madden 23 either. As EA Sports also announced that there will be three special covers rolled out as part of the game’s release. Each of which will highlight a specific chapter in John Madden’s legendary football career.
Not only that, but Madden’s voice will also return to the game for the first time in over ten years. With the use of remastered audio clips from his days as an 16-time Emmy Award-winning broadcaster. Madden 23 will be bringing back some of Madden’s iconic catchphrases like; “Boom!”, “Whap!”, “Bang”, and “Doink!”.
How Many Times Has John Madden Appeared on the Cover?
As previously mentioned, this isn’t the first time John Madden has appeared on the cover of the Madden video game. Though it has been a while, he was featured on a large portion of the earlier titles from the late 80s into the 1990s. In total, John Madden has appeared on the cover a whopping 12 times! His last appearance was in 1999 on the cover of Madden NFL 2000.
