Is Dead Space (2023) Worth it if You Played the Original?

The new remake of the 2008 survival horror classic title, Dead Space is here and boasts wonderful new reasons to jump into a newer version of an older title. But these days, many players have had their own experiences with remasters or full remakes of their favorite games for better, but most often worse.

So what makes Dead Space 2023 different? Should players give it the time of day or just let this one pass by? Well, let’s discuss whether or not Dead Space 2023 is worth playing if you’ve already had your time with the original.

Is Dead Space (2023) Worth it if You Played the Original?

Modernized Visuals

The biggest thing that people are going to see whether or not they actually play the game for themselves is the newly reinvigorated visual experience. But that’s not limited strictly to the visual fidelity that players are going to see with flashy lights and smoke or vapors.

Dead Space 2023 has a new focus on darkness, making the corridors and environments way more complex, with scares awaiting in every corner. Additionally, a lot of areas are reworked to appear far more realistic in their fictional presence.

Refined Gameplay

Gameplay has also seen leaps and bounds of change. Many of the in-game weapons this time around operate with new or improved aspects to them in order to further gameplay. Not only that, but some sections have expanded gameplay such as zero gravity moments. Players can now freely float Isaac around in larger rooms from point to point.

Along with that comes different locations that players can explore. Though this isn’t an open world to explore, there are new additional corridors to search and even side missions that players can now pick up. Don’t get me started on the fact that there’s now a new game plus mode as well as haptic feedback for DualSense on PS5, making it even more worth it to try for yourself.

A New Telling of the Same Story

Last but certainly not least are the various new elements added to the story, such as a secret ending and character change-ups throughout the story. The entire thing seems to flow more organically and feels better, especially when connected to such mature content. Isaac even gets to speak, finally. He has a bigger presence in the story, making the connection between players and him far stronger than in the original.

At the end of the day, Dead Space 2023 is most definitely worth picking, whether you’re new to the series or not. And that’s saying something for a $70 remake of a game.
