Do you ever feel connected to something on a personal level? Like as if the thing you are watching knows you personally? I am not taking about stans of a celebrity that wholeheartedly believe they know the ins-and-outs of their idol but rather, when a song, show, film, book or video game just hits? There are not many out there that can connect with me in the fictitious world but typically it will be something with good LGBTQIA+ or POC representation, or a subject matter I can truly relate to that stands out above all else. But sometimes, a specific type of horror hits me like crashing head first into a brick wall of being completely in awe of the product. These are video games such as imscared, IMMORTALITY, The Voidness and now Amanda the Adventurer. But are games like these based on a true story, like most horror content claims to be? This is Vincent’s take.
Is Amanda the Adventurer a Real Show?
Simply put, Amanda the Adventurer messes with your head. It behaves similarly to that of Kimi to Kanojo to Kanojo no Koi, later inspiring Doki Doki Literature Club, or previous mind-foolery with imscared who manipulate or add extra content within the game file to feel as though the game itself is real. Other times, games will add a special line of code that taps into your PC System to find your username or biological name and use this to scare you into following its fourth-wall breaking, authoritative position in the game. But in Amanda the Adventurer, you are lured into a trap sent by Hameln, but unfortunately for Riley, she was lead into this not be the Piper themselves but by her Aunt Kate.
Unlike what many may have initially thought about Amanda the Adventurer, the TV Show is not real. Whilst it takes a lot of influence from Dora the Explorer, a famous Kid’s TV Show, the only true resemblance is within its name and the fact that you follow a young girl with an animal sidekick. The Show is meant to make you think about Dora for the nostalgia and immediate trickery in believing that this Show is innocent, pure and is not hiding anything from you. This is all to make you comfortable as insert the first Tape, embarking on a adventure with Amanda herself that will leave you wishing you did not.

What is Amanda the Adventurer Based on?
As the Amanda the Adventurer TV Show is not real, we can also tell you for a fact that the Secret Tapes including real people are in fact fake too. These are added into the game for realism, making you see the characters in the cursed TV Show as real people too. It further frightens the player into believing that real people were kidnapped and entrapped inside the Tapes. This also makes you, the player believe that perhaps, you will be the next victim. You are so engrossed in the Tapes that you forget to think about the repercussions for yourself until you reach the very end of the game.
As the real people in the Secret Tapes are in fact Actors, and very good for that matter, it is to no surprise that players wondered if the TV Show was at least based on a true story. After all, many have been led to believe over the years that horror films such as Blair Witch, The Conjuring and others are based on real events too. Most of these horrors sell on the idea that this happened to someone in the past. Take the rise of Rayll’s Fears to Fathom for example, who follows this same idea and excels in it.
But Amanda the Adventurer is not real at all, rather it is incredibly similar to Dora the Explorer and horror films such as The Ring, Poltergeist and Cabin in the Woods in which it follows cursed objects and rules. We are seeing more and more horror games that follow the concept of a previously beloved Children’s Show, Event or Company, turning deadly or becoming cursed by a mysterious force/ being sentient and hostile. Examples of this being Five Nights at Freddy’s and Poppy Playtime. Amanda the Adventurer follows this idea of turning something that should be sweet, innocent, educational and once beloved, into something with a consciousness but without conscience to commit wicked acts against their fans – the children.
