Part of developing your Sims in The Sims 4 is giving them hobbies and passions to pursue. If you’re opting for more creative pursuits, nothing beats a jam on the ol’ guitar, but if you really want to push it to the limit, you can have your Sims write their very own songs.

How to Write Songs in The Sims 4

Getting a particular Sim to start writing songs can be boiled down to a simple step-by-step process:

  • Buy an instrument
  • Raise the Sim’s musical skills to level eight
  • Click “Write Song” from the instrument menu
  • Choose the kind of song you want and name it

The first step of writing a song is buying an instrument. If you open up the catalog, you can buy a guitar, piano, or violin for them to play. Those three instruments are the only ones available in the base game, though if you have the City Living pr Get Together expansions, you can opt to have your Sim sing or use DJ turntables, respectively.

Once you’ve got your instrument of choice, you need to have your Sim practice with it. You can’t write a song if you can’t play anything coherent, after all. You’ll need to have your Sim play enough to raise their musical skills to at least level eight. Incidentally, your Sim can do this at any age, whether they be teenager or adult.

When your Sim reaches level eight, click on their instrument to bring up its menu. You should see a new “Write Song” option. Click that, and you’ll get a selection of different song genres, such as plucky tunes and dramatic ballads. You can do this as soon as your Sim hits level eight, though you’ll unlock more genres as their skills improve further. Choose the kind of song you want to write, and your Sim will start gradually putting it together.

If they have to stop working on it for whatever reason, they’ll stash some Music Sheets in their inventory, which you can use to resume composing later.

When the song is composed, just give it a name, and you’re all done! Now anytime you click on your Sim’s instrument, you can have them play their written song on demand. If you raise their musical skills to at least level nine, you can also have their song licensed by clicking on the mailbox. Licensed songs will passively bring royalty payments to your Sim over the course of a week, though they won’t be able to use their instrument to write new songs until that week ends.
