Winning a diplomatic victory (also known as a diplomacy victory) in Civ 6 takes a focused strategy that involves multiple elements. However, by focusing on the right Wonder builds, you can achieve other necessary goals while working for diplomacy.
To start gunning for a diplomacy victory, you’ll need to enable the Gathering Storm expansion in Civ 6. If you aren’t playing that one, you won’t have the option to earn what you need to win and to participate in World Congress.
What is World Congress?
World Congress is basically like the United Nations, but in the game, and empires do not have to get voted in. All civs participate in World Congress. You may even see “unmet civilization” in there! The World Congress enacts measures that benefit or harm aspects of what a civilization can do, for example, a moratorium on trading silver (not great if that’s your main trade).
To avoid being negatively targeted in World Congress, you should maintain friendly relations with other nations.
About Diplomatic Favor
To vote in the World Congress, you need Diplomatic Favor. You can get Diplomatic Favor by interacting with other civs in a peaceful way. You get Diplomatic Favor via the Diplomatic Quarter (you need the Ethiopia Pack to build this), generating Alliances with other players, being the Suzerain of city states, and advancing tiers of governments.
Therefore, all diplomatic actions generally lead towards a diplomacy victory:
- Avoid warmongering, pursue peace
- Build diplomatic quarters
- Invest in Alliances
- Invest in City States, especially with your Diplomacy policy cards
- Focus on advancing governments and be the first to reach each tier
Buy Diplomatic Favor From AI Players
If your civ is producing a lot of gold, one of the easiest ways to earn Diplomatic Favor is to simply buy it from AI players, who are often happy to sell. Diplomatic Favor is generally more valuable than other currencies, and I do not recommend selling it unless you’re near another victory type and need the cash in hand.
Diplomatic Favor is relevant because it helps you vote for positive outcomes for yourself, and to vote in favor of Aid Requests, non Emergency Scored Competitions, and the Late Game World Leader Elections.
If you get to that point, you can add or subtract Diplomatic Victory Points in World Congress based upon how you vote — and as always in World Congress, you can always vote for yourself!
What Are Diplomatic Victory Points in Civ 6?
Through various actions, you can collect Diplomatic Victory Points in the game. To win in Standard mode, you must get to 20. These aren’t easy to come by, but if you focus on specific Wonders and accomplishments, it’s possible.
Some Civ 6 Wonders Provide Diplomatic Victory Points
Some wonders provide Diplomatic Victory Points when you build them. This is a rare reward. The following Wonders provide Diplomatic Victory Points:
- Statue of Liberty – 4
- Mahabodhi Temple – 2
- Potala Palace – 1
Remember: most Wonders require certain terrain or conditions to build them; make sure you investigate each and plan accordingly.
The Statue of Liberty is considered crucial for many diplomacy wins.
Discoveries and Research That Provide Diplomatic Victory Points
A couple discoveries and areas of research also grant these precious points, including:
- Seasteads (Future Era Tech) – 1
- Global Warming Mitigation (Future Era Civic) – 1
Consider Going for a Diplomacy Victory in Cooperative Play Mode
In cooperative play, knowing how to win a diplomacy victory in Civ 6 is especially useful. That’s because your two nations play together — and win together — as one team. This provides an advantage in World Congress, where you can vote strategically and also participate in world events to win Diplomatic Victory Points.
Assuming you don’t let another civ get too far ahead in science, a diplomacy victory is among the easiest to win in Civ 6 when playing cooperatively with another person.
