How to View Petitions in Dwarf Fortress

What are petitions and how do you see them?

Dwarf Fortress recently got updated to version 50.07 and has added the ability to view Petitions. This is a feature that players have been wanting for years. For the longest time, there was a need to use third-party tools to see what Petitions were open and thankfully now that is no longer the case.

What are Petitions?

Petitions are demands from foreign entities. They can be a whole army or just one person! Petitions are different from diplomatic agreements that you make with other civilizations. The effects of accepting or failing petitions can reign from dramatic to very boring.

To get Petitions you need to have a mayor who has their own office. This allows a foreign petitioner to set up a meeting with the mayor in their office.

What Petitions Can You Get?

  • Petitions for long-term residency.
    • Whoever is passing by and wants to join your settlement for a bit will petition themselves as one of the following: tavern entertainer, soldiering study, or monster slayer. They will stay with you but won’t do any other labor.
  • Petition for citizenship.
    • Once a dwarf has lived with you for more than two years they will want to live permanently.
  • Petition for an artifact by a passing quest
    • NPC. A Quest NPC will approach your settlement and request an artifact from you. If you oblige and give them the item essentially you’re awarded being safe. If you deny the NPC you will have to deal with the NPC turning hostile or them sneaking into your base or they will return with a siege from the country they represent.
  • Petition to parley with an invading army.
    • An army will camp in your area and want to fight you if you denied the quest giver the artifact previously they will request the item to be turned over or they will attack.
  • Petition for a local temple or guild hall.
    • If your dwarves all worship the same deity you can make a church for them. A guild hall will be requested if you have a large number of dwarves interested in the same trade.
  • Petition for grand guild hall.
    • If you have more dwarves in the same trade they will want to upgrade to a grand guildhall.
  • Petition for a priest.
    • Once the church has a lot of worshippers they will want a priest to help lead their worship.

How to View Petitions

Once you have accepted a Petition there will be a button that pops up on your screen that says PETITIONS on it. You can only view this screen if you have a Petition in a pending status. Once you accept or deny a Petition you can no longer access this screen.

If I'm not grinding something in one of the many games I play (Final Fantasy XIV, World of Warcraft, Runescape, Epic Seven etc) I can be found working on my novel, reading, watching anime or hanging out with my three dogs.
