How to Use the Map in Tchia

No one said navigation was easy.

Some of my family members went on an island-hopping vacation recently. They told me it was fun, but if they weren’t following a set tourist route, they probably would’ve gotten lost. If navigating through the world of Tchia is any indication, there’s some truth to that, but it’s just an opportunity for exploration. Here’s how to use the map in Tchia.

How to Use the Map in Tchia

Not long into the story of Tchia, Tre gives Tchia his boat, along with a map and compass. This map encompasses the entire archipelago and can be used to help you get your bearings. However, there’s a very important element you may not notice right away: the map doesn’t actively track your position in the world. It is just a paper map, after all.

If you pull up the map with the Options/Select button, you’ll see a little doodle of Tchia, but that only indicates her last known location rather than where she currently is. If you’re really lost, you can press the Right Stick Button on the map to have Tchia give you an educated guess of where she is, but even that’ll only highlight a general area on the map rather than a precise location. Your compass will point in the general direction of major story events, but for everything else, you’re on your own.

So how can you make the map more accurate? There are three methods:

  • Points of View
  • Orientation Signs
  • Manual Markers

Scattered around the archipelago are Points of View, distinctive spots located atop high locations like cliffs, hills, and buildings. Tchia can let loose a shout from these spots to update her last known location, as well as mark interesting things on the map like activities or important people.

Similarly, Orientation Signs are also found all over the place, mostly around developed paths and roads. If you interact with an Orientation Sign, Tchia will update her last known location and circle a much smaller part of the map to give you a more precise idea of where she is.

Ultimately, though, it’s on you to familiarize yourself with the topography of the archipelago and surrounding seas. To help with that, you can press A/X on the map to stick a marker pin wherever your cursor is. These will help you keep track of anything you want to come back to, though it’s up to you to remember what each pin actually means.

It may seem a little daunting to not have a 100% accurate idea of your position at any given time, but this is by design. Rather than worry about where you’re going, take the time to really appreciate where you are. You may find navigating easier if you keep track of notable landmarks!
