Passive mode is the games way of letting those who are afraid of what’s under their boat take a calm ride through the waters. Essentially, all of the creatures and wildlife in the water will still be there, but with passive mode on, they’re harmless. There’s no fear to be had while this feature is on, and can be likened to the arachnophobia features in other games like Grounded and Hogwarts Legacy. At any time during the game, players just need to open their settings, and toggle on passive mode from there. A perfect feature for those of us with thalassophobia or other fears of the ocean, but it might be one you want to wait to enable.

If you haven’t played Dredge already, a main part of the game is the lingering fear of the Lovecraftian creatures. Knowing that you must brave the seas knowing at any time, there might be something right under the water. Turning on passive mode eliminates this fear and in turn, a large part of the games attraction. However, there are some with a predisposition to these fears that make the game unplayable. This feature is perfect for those people, but if you don’t have an issue with these fears, it’s recommended that you wait to use passive mode until your second playthrough.
