How to Unlock the Laboratory in Aliens: Dark Descent

Space Marine Exterminators

In Aliens: Dark Descent, you cannot rely solely on your bullets to keep you alive in this dire situation. The Xenomorph infestation is growing wider by the minute and the only way to put a stop to it is to attack it at the source. But as we all know from watching the films, these creatures cannot be beaten so easily. Although they appear afraid of fire and do indeed bleed (although it is acid), you will need to learn this the hard way by descending into Planet Lethe blind. With a few Marines by your side and just enough magazines to deal with an occasional Xenomorph, you will need to put the smartest minds at Otago together to create something impactful for your survival against these swarms. This is Vincent’s guide on how to unlock the Laboratory in Aliens: Dark Descent.

Unlock the Laboratory for Studies into the Xenomorph

The Laboratory on Otago is incredibly important to increase your knowledge and gain the upper hand against the Xenomorph. With their biology being almost impenetrable and having hardly any weaknesses for you to take advantage of, you will need to learn more on how they behave and survive on Planet Lethe. By exploring and investigating throughout your runs, you will be able to find more evidence that research is needed on specific equipment in order to protect yourself from the impending threats. Equipment such as Armor Plates are available, alongside having an ability to defeat Facehuggers by using the Extraction Device.

In order to unlock the Laboratory however, players will need to enter Dead Hills for the first time. This is classified as your first official Mission in Aliens: Dark Descent. With the sole goal being to rescue any Colonist you find in your exploration, you will need to complete all objectives for this Mission to gain access to the Laboratory and begin your studies. You will know when you have completed all Mission objectives when the game tells you that there are no more objectives to complete in Dead Hill and that you should return to Otago.

You need to first Deactivate the Emergency Lockdown to then begin your search for any surviving Colonists. In case you were wondering which objectives appear for this Mission or if you are missing anything in your run, you need to:

  1. Reactivate the Colony’s Satcom.
  2. Get into Headquarters by lifting the Emergency Lockdown.
  3. Find Engineer O’Neil.
  4. Find Engineer Macallan.
  5. Locate Technician Carmicheal.
  6. Locate the Source of the Infestation via the Cameras.
  7. Locate Biologist Everly.
  8. Save Veterinarian McNeil – Recover Sentry Gun – Open Door and Protect McNeil.
  9. Save Security Guard Torrence – Find Keycard on Souza’s corpse – Use Key on Cell Terminal.
  10. Activate Decontamination (after finding all Colonists in the area).
  11. Reach Slaughterhouse and use Terminal to unlock.
  12. Find Container in Main Processing Room.
  13. Optional Objective – Survive the Crusher.
  14. Reach Colony Director Gallagher’s Office.
  15. Return to Otago.

Remember to keep referring back to the Map for all Primary Objectives as most coincide with one another.

You will need to complete specific objectives on your Mission in order to gain access to studying technology that will provide you with extra firepower, defences and a new way to combat the Xenomorphs. Each study requires a minimum amount of Xenosamples needed to unlock the device you want to bring with you into each Mission. Keep in mind that once unlocked, you will still need to spend Xenosamples per Mission for any device you want to take with you. Because of this, do not spend your Points whenever you have some available. You will need to carefully think about what is more important than others. Perhaps you have a tough Optional Boss to face, or you simply run into too many Facehuggers that you cannot afford to lose any more Marines.
