To unlock Sonic, you have a bit of work to do. First you must play through the first eight worlds and get through them however you possibly can. There is no special trick or method you need to follow in order to do this.

After completing the first weight worlds, you can grab a Space Case Sonic. After world eight, he should join your other characters on the character selection screen. You can only choose to use Sonic in the main game, and cannot use him for online mode or other party game modes.

When you play as Sonic, all of the bananas turn into rings, and the music will change to Sonic music. While these changes may be minimal, they pay homage to the classic Sonic games fans know and love.
