Throughout the God of War series, Kratos has made no secret that he’s skilled with a variety of weapons. Kinda comes with the whole Spartan-slash-war god territory. While his recent exploits haven’t had as many weapons, that doesn’t make the ones he has any less deadly, especially when he upgrades them. How to Unlock All Weapons and Upgrade Them in God of War Ragnarok

In God of War Ragnarok, Kratos has access to three main weapons. Two of these are holdovers from the previous game, while one of them is a brand-new weapon. All three of these weapons have their own specialties, including both combat and field applications.

Leviathan Axe

Kratos’ default weapon, a memento of his late wife, Fey. The Leviathan Axe is a well-balanced weapon, boasting both solid speed and strength, and its ability to fly back to Kratos’ hand also makes it a surprisingly powerful ranged weapon. Its elemental affinity is Ice, allowing it to freeze and hinder enemies it strikes and freeze machinery.

Blades of Chaos

A leftover from Kratos’ days as a god of Olympus, the Blades of Chaos deliver flailing, slicing slashes in a wide area thanks to their attached chains. While not as outright strong as the Leviathan Axe, the Blades of Chaos are great for crowd control. Their elemental affinity is Fire, inflicting damage over time on struck enemies and burning away wooden obstructions.

Draupnir Spear

A new weapon for God of War Ragnarok, the Draupnir Spear boasts fearsome strength and reach at the cost of some mobility. Its elemental affinity is Wind, allowing it to fly long distances when thrown and bowl foes over. You can also jab it into certain surfaces to create swinging spots.

The good news about these weapons is that you can’t miss any of them. Every main weapon in God of War Ragnarok is unlocked through regular story progression, so you’ll get access to them when it’s time for you to get access to them.

If you’d like specifics, the weapons are unlocked upon completion of the following story missions:

  • Leviathan Axe: Default weapon, unlocked from the start of the game.
  • Blades of Chaos: Unlocked upon completing the story mission Surviving Fimbulwinter
  • Draupnir Spear: Unlocked upon completing the story mission Forging Destiny

How to Upgrade Weapons

As strong as each of these weapons are, they can absolutely be stronger. All you need is the right materials and a master craftsman, the latter of which Kratos happens to know two of. Returning from the previous game are the dwarven brothers Brok and Sindri, who have set up numerous smithing stations across the realms. If you’ve got materials, they’ll upgrade the strength and stats of your weapons, and unlike with armor upgrades, they won’t charge you Hacksilver for them. You’ll run into the brothers early on in the story, and their shops will be marked on your map, so chat them up whenever you want to get smithing.

The only thing you should be aware of is that each weapon has its own unique upgrade material. You’ll need at least one chunk of a weapon’s respective material to upgrade it once. The unique materials for each weapon are:

  • Leviathan Axe: Frozen Flame
  • Blades of Chaos: Chaos Flame
  • Draupnir Spear: Gale Flame

These materials can be found in certain rare chests, as well as obtained from defeating powerful enemies like bosses. It’s generally a good policy to check in with Brok or Sindri every time you beat a major story boss, as you’ll have likely picked up some materials you can use.

Master Kratos’ weapons to show those Norse gods how they do things over on Olympus. And when those weapons ain’t enough, make ’em even stronger!
