Minecraft worlds, in general, are big. Even with some means of faster travel at your disposal like Elytras or horses, it’s just too much trouble to get around a Minecraft world through traditional means. In such a situation, you’re going to have to make an ever-so-slight mockery of the laws of physics.
Here’s how to teleport in Minecraft.
How To Teleport in Minecraft
To clarify, there are two primary means of teleportation in Minecraft: one that you can do with native abilities available in-game, and one that requires a bit of external tinkering with console commands. Obviously, the latter is more effective and powerful than the former, but we’ll cover both just in case you want to keep things fair.
In-Game Teleportation
Unassisted teleportation requires the use of Ender Pearls, special items occasionally dropped by Endermen. Normally, you would combine these with some Blaze Powder to make Eyes of Ender, which are in turn used in the construction of an End Portal, but you can also use them for short-range teleportation.
To teleport with an Ender Pearl, just equip it and press the Use button to throw it. You’ll instantly blink to wherever the Ender Pearl lands, though you will take a bit of fall damage in the process. There are a few rules to this method:
- You can only teleport as far as you can throw the Ender Pearl
- Ender Pearls that fall into the void won’t teleport you, though Ender Pearls that fall into lava will teleport you
- Teleporting with an Ender Pearl will consume it
This isn’t a particularly effective means of travel. Ender Pearl teleportation is only really recommended for quick escapes and emergency travel in short bursts.
Command Teleportation
If you don’t have any qualms about turning cheats on, you can easily teleport anywhere in your Minecraft world, so long as you have the coordinates. You can enable cheats when you first create your Minecraft world, or from the in-game settings menu.
With cheats enabled, just press the T key or right on your controller’s directional pad to open up the chat. The code you need to type is “/tp,” followed by a set of XYZ coordinates. These coordinates will send you a certain number of blocks east, a certain number of blocks into the air, and a certain number of blocks south, in that order. You can also swap those directions by putting a minus sign in front of the numbers. So, for example, if you typed “/tp -50 89 74,” you’d go 50 blocks west, 89 blocks up, and 74 blocks south. If you’re playing with other players online, you can also opt to teleport directly to them. Just type “/tp” followed by the player’s name, and you’ll pop up right next to them.
One thing to be careful of when teleporting is knowing where you are relative to the ground. If you teleport yourself too far down, you’ll end up suffocating in a wall. You can mitigate this by putting the word “true” at the end of your teleport command. If there are any solid blocks in the spot where you attempt to teleport to, the game will reject it, letting you fix your coordinates and try again. If you press the F3 key, you’ll get a readout of the coordinates around you, which you can use to pinpoint a safe spot to jump to.
The teleport command is handy if you’re playing on a creative server and don’t care that much about sticking to travel times. Just make sure, if you’re playing online, that you’re allowed to use it before you try.
