In Dwarf Fortress, your dwarves will be learning skills as they specialize in their tasks. As you fortress grows, your will be working with numerous groups of skilled and specialized dwarves, all who want to be able to congregate. That’s when you’ll need guildhalls. Guildhalls are places for your skilled dwarves to share ideas and socialize, and they may even demand one be built. Here is how to build a guildhall in Dwarf Fortress.
Setting up a guildhall in Dwarf Fortress
In Dwarf Fortress, setting up your guildhall is easy, but there are some things to think about first. There will be two reasons for building a guildhall, either your dwarves are wishing for one to be built, or you want to attract a certain skill from visiting dwarves.
In either case, the guildhall needs to be accessible and a moderate size. This is because guildhalls don’t need certain facilities or chests or stations, but value.
For a guildhall to become a guildhall, it needs to have a value of at least 2,000. This is done through placing valuable items in the guildhall, such as statues or fancy furniture. Assign a dwarf as a broker to see the value of items and to see the value of the room.
So you will need enough space to decorate the hall, but you won’t need it to be large unless you want to turn the guildhall into a grand guildhall, which needs a value of 10,000.
Before you start moving items in, firstly carve out or build the room you wish, and then assign it as a meeting area. From that menu, you can specialize the meeting area into a guildhall by clicking the button with a wooden sign and a plus symbol.
Then, you must choose what skill the guildhall will represent. Make sure it matches the profession that other your dwarves are petitioning for, or the skill that you want to attract.
Then, simply move everything in and keep making the room more valuable until it becomes a guildhall.

Your guild hall in action
Guildhalls are incredibly useful for your fortress. Dwarves of that skill will meet there to socialize and share skills and knowledge, increasing the overall skill in your fortress. Additionally, creatures may visit from outside the fortress to perform demonstrations to your dwarves, increasing their skills and improving their moods.
You may also attract dwarves with that specific skill who may want to stay long-term. Guildhalls also satisfy your dwarves’ need to learn something and practice skills and help people, improving the general mood.
