How to Recruit Smiley in Jagged Alliance 3

He's all smiles until a mob boss takes his girl

There is nothing better than coming across a Mercenary that can be recruited for free. After spending thousands of dollar to extend contracts, deal with Mercs that hate each other, or attempt to have a squad of Legendary Mercs, players deserve a little reward every once in a while. Whilst there are methods to keep the cost of the operations to a minimal, such as recruiting from the lowest Merc Tier (Recruits), you may decide that simply playing for the best of the best for Mercs is not a viable option in this strategy game (especially at the beginning of a playthrough). For this reason, Haemimont Games have added in free Mercs you can find in your travel, much like completing some Missionary work. This is Vincent’s guide on how to recruit Smiley in Jagged Alliance 3.

Who is Alejando “Smiley” Diaz?

Smiley is one of the free Mercenaries you can find in Jagged Alliance 3. He is an All-Rounder Class that provides a very balanced set of skills and Stats to make him a prime target for training. Smiley can really become whatever you wish for him to be (aside from a Doctor or Explosives Expert). Smiley’s Perk is an increased 20% max health, alongside buffs in accuracy and Run and Gunning (however these come with their own setbacks). Whilst Smiley is not particularly stronger than other Mercs in the game, he is a great pick for those wanting to save a bit of money and look for a character that can be moulded.

Where to Recruit Smiley in Jagged Alliance 3

Smiley is the one of the hardest to recruit from the free Mercenary route depending on when you try to find him. Although the majority of his recruitment quest can be completed with relative ease, you may find that the final battle is much tougher than you may have initially thought. Due to the close-quarters combat of highly congested enemies, you may have problems winning the fight. But this is dependant on your squad and what playstyle you have prioritized over others. For example, if you went down a stealthier route with stealth kills in the spotlight with Mercs such as Fox and Blood, you may find that this will not be particularly useful here. For this reason, it is best to utilize Mercs that have high Explosive and Marksman Skills or special Perks that allow you to get multi-kills and deal heavy damage in a larger radius than other Mercenaries.

Smiley can be found in Sector I9 but to get here you will need to begin the questline with Maman Liliane in Sector D7, located at the Brothel. Through completing the objectives as part of Liliane’s story, you will be lead directly to Smiley. When up against Boss Blaubert, you will want to first focus your attention on the Enforcers wielding shotguns in the front garden area. The battle is incredibly close-quarters where you will be surrounded by enemies from the get-go. Because of this, you need to prepare yourself for a difficult battle against Strong and Super Strong enemies where you will also likely need to heal not only your squad, but Smiley himself as he gets downed in the fight against the mob boss.
