How to Prepare for Sims 4 Going Free to Play

We are going to assume that players who are giving Sims 4 a try now that it’s free are coming in completely new. That’s okay! We all have to start somewhere! If you’re going to play Sims 4 on your PC or MAC we have some great tips for you in order to organize your mods folder. What is a mods folder? A mod folder contains all of the necessary custom content and extra add ons you can use in the game. Want to wear some modern clothing? Try adding alpha custom content. Want to make your Sim finish her homework faster? Mods can do that. This is probably a lot of information right now, but don’t worry, we’ll break it down. First things first, let’s talk about custom content.

What is Custom Content in Sims 4?

Unfortunately Sims 4 doesn’t have a lot of options when creating a Sim. You have the basic clothes, skins, and other features but they’re not the best. Creators in the Sim world have made custom content which are files you can add to your game to create their look. First, let’s find out what type of Sim creator are you. Do you want to create a Sim wearing high-quality looks? Do you have a high-spec computer that can handle the graphics? Want a more glossy look for your Sim rather than matte? You’ll be wanting alpha custom content in your game. If you’re looking for clothes that match well with the color palette in Sims 4 you’ll want to go with Maxis Match custom content. After you’ve decided the type of custom content you want you’ll want to search for creators who specialize in them. You can use places such as Sims Resource, Pinterest, and even Tumblr to find what you’re looking for.

What are mods in Sims 4?

Mods alter gameplay whether in a small way, such as having your Sim finish their homework incredibly fast, or in a huge way where you can give realistic birth scenarios to your Sims. Mods are completely safe to use and all you need to do are these three things:

  • Make sure the mod you’re downloading is UPDATED and matches the latest Sims 4 version to prevent your game from breaking or glitching
  • Add .script files to your main mods folder, whereas .packages can be in multiple folders.
  • Turn on allow mods and custom content in your game under settings so you can see them

Some people like to add mods that give them a realistic experience. If you’re wanting to have a realistic life where you can smoke, go to the dentist, take out loans, and ask your parents about dating then they will change gameplay. Others just want better gameplay, meaning, they use mods to remove clutter from social interactions when Sims are talking or they have a UI cheat that allows you to fill your needs and raise your skill levels with ease. However you play the game always make sure the mod is updated to your latest version and isn’t broken.

Realistic Mods to Download for Sims 4

If you are wanting to go the realistic route and you want realism in your game, look no further, because we have some mods you should always keep in your mods folder. You can always mess with the mods settings if you want to turn certain actions off or turn some on. For example, MCC mod has certain settings where you need to either turn them off or on. If you want your spouse to give you child support you need to turn this feature on. Do you want your teen Sims to fall for young adults? Have to turn it on. Here are our top realistic mods you need to download for Sims 4.

  • MCC: MC Command Center should be in everyone’s mod folder. This is a mod that you’ll be using religiously. It can help you cheat to gain certain levels in skills, you can add or remove relationships, allows you to change your Sims favorite drink or umbrella, and much more. Do you like population control? Do you like being able to add a relationship with an NPC without having to talk to them? This is a mod for every day use.
  • Basemental Drugs: This mod isn’t something you need, but it does add a bit of realism if you’re wanting to create a family that has drug substance problems. Maybe your teen ran away and is now smoking to cope? The storylines you could create from this mod are honestly the best. Basemental Drugs allows drug use and you can even regulate which cities are legal to do it. You can assign police and they can raid your home if there are drugs.
  • PandaSama Childbirth Mod: If you really want to add realism you need this mod. You can talk to a doctor about having a C-Section or if you want to do it the natural way. There’s also a way for your pregnant Sim to do breathing exercises and your partner can sway with you. There’s lots of moodlets you can gain when you have this mod. Yes, when you have a C-Section or normal birth, you will see the baby actually come out. The animation is insane and we love how realistic it is.
