As with most racing games, especially for those with Need for Speed in their title, Nitrous is going to be any racer’s bread and butter. It allows them to get an inch closer to victory, nearly floating at hyper speeds past their competition. EA and Criterion’s latest racer Need for Speed Unbound, however, changes things up a bit with the management system and ways to gain it worth talking about. So, let’s explain how to manage and/or build up Nitrous in Need for Speed Unbound!
How to Manage/Build Up Nitrous in Need for Speed Unbound
In Need for Speed Unbound, there are actually two types of Nitrous to worry about as you’re racing. Of course, you have your typical Nitrous use, where you hold down its dedicated button in order to get into sort of a slipstream. This will last until your Nitrous is emptied for the time being. It’ll begin to fill back up over time just by racing, and you’ll eventually be able to use it yet again to pass by the competition.
Your other use case is actually going to be something called Burst Nitrous. This is a new form of Nitrous that allows you to activate a short burst that operates off of its own dedicated charge system. To build it up, you’ll need to perform jumps, drifts, drafts, and near-misses in order for it to fill up, and it will begin to deplete if not used quickly.
How Gas Stations Help With Nitrous in Need for Speed Unbound
An important component of Nitrous in Need for Speed Unbound is the Gas Stations littered throughout Lakeshore. Whether during a race or just as you’re freely roaming about, you can drive straight through a Gas Station’s lot and you’ll be given a full dose of both standard and Burst Nitrous.

How to Use Nitrous in Need for Speed Unbound
In order to use either of the Nitrous choices in Need for Speed Unbound, you’re going to want to locate the A or Cross button, depending on whether or not you’re on Xbox or PlayStation.
- For your standard Nitrous, you’re going to want to hold that button down for however long you’d like to use it, or until the blue gauge in the bottom right corner goes out.
- For Burst Nitrous, you’ll want to just press that button. You can build up to 3 consecutive bursts at a time, and they can be viewed as the yellow bars in the bottom right of your Nitrous gauge.
