Dwarf Fortress is the incredible game that has inspired legends in the gaming world. Praised for being realistic, the game makes sure that its processes are as physically feasible as possible, which can make certain things difficult for players. The process of making steel can be one such confusing processes. Here is how to make steel in Dwarf Fortress.
Getting ready to make steel in Dwarf Fortress
Dwarf Fortress is loved by its community for how its processes work, but somethings may just be too difficult or annoying to figure out by yourself. Steel is an alloy or iron and carbon, making it stronger than a pure metal. However, the creation process is a little tricky. Especially when the game won’t allow you to make it due to the lack of ‘Flux Stones’.
The creation of steel requires these ingredients:
- 1 flux stone
- 1 iron bar
- 1 pig iron bar
- 1 unit of fuel
Note that the unit of fuel is in addition to the fuel needed for the heat, as it provides the carbon in the reaction.
Also note that ‘flux stones’ are a group of materials. Calcite, chalk, dolomite, limestone and marble are all flux stones. As long as you have one of any of these materials, you’ll be fine.

Smelting steel in Dwarf Fortress
As long as you have a smelter and all of the required ingredients, you can start making steel. Select the smelter and select the order to make steel. An available dwarf will run to the task. The recipe above creates 2 steel bars, so it is a very expensive alloy to make.
It is worth it, however, as it is incredibly strong and has a very high value.
