Due to the seemingly infinite opportunities to explore in Pikmin 4, you may find yourself trying to go for a little swim whilst riding Oatchi. Whilst we are all away of a dogs innate ability to swim the moment that their paws land in water, it does not guarantee that this fact will transfer directly into Oatchi’s genes in Pikmin. Although Oatchi is blatantly inspired by our friendly and loyal canines the majority of us own, even I can relate to the rare cases of a dog being afraid of water (trust me I have 3 at home). Because of this, Oatchi’s first moment in water is a bit of a scary one. But how do you teach Oatchi to swim? This is Vincent’s guide on the matter.
Can Oatchi Overcome his Fear of Water?
In your first attempt to get Oatchi into water, you will see that he clearly panics and at the time, is completely incapable from paddling through the streams. But this does not mean that Oatchi can never learn to swim in Pikmin 4. Instead, after experience such a traumatic event of drowning and losing your new pup for good, Oatchi can actually learn the skill Doggy-Paddle after two in-game days have passed. You will not have to do anything for him to learn this skill, rather he teaches himself so that you can get across water with ease.
Once Oatchi teaches himself to swim, the Doggy-Paddle Lvl 1 will be visible in Training. You can upgrade this skill further until Lvl 3 so that he is able to attack whilst swimming and move treasure from point A to B, all with you travelling on his back for safety. Keep in mind however that you will need Pup Drive Points to assign so that Oatchi can do a lot more than simply swimming across a body of water.
