How to Make a Mushroom Biome in Terraria

Summon the Truffle man

In Terraria, you can make your own Biome by using specific Seeds and waiting for these Seeds to grow and spread across the Surface. These Biomes can be crafted anywhere and used to summon specific NPCs which sell unique items that cannot be bought anywhere else. When making a Mushroom Biome, in order to fully reap the benefits, players need to play on Hardmode. Whilst this Biome will spawn in Mushroom-related enemies, it has its benefits. This is our step-by-step guide on how to make a Mushroom Biome on the Surface of Terraria. This guide will also tell you the benefits to making one.

How to Make a Mushroom Biome Step-by-step

  • Firstly, you need to find yourself a Mushroom Biome. These can be found in the Underground Caverns. Once you find the Biome (with glowing mushrooms), begin pulling out the Glowing Mushrooms.
  • The chances of the Grass Seeds dropping from a pulled up Mushroom are 1/40. Because of this, do not feel as though the method is not working if you cannot find any Seeds to begin with.
  • Once you have collected some Seeds (we recommend starting with 10). Head back to the Surface. Note: When a Seed is picked up an item pop up will appear above you with the words ‘Mushroom Grass Seeds’ to signify that the item has been picked up.
  • On the Surface, you need a minimum of 100 Mud Blocks to start making the Biome. You will need to place at least 2 vertical layers of Mud for the Mushrooms to start growing and spreading across the Surface.
  • With the Mud Blocks placed (wherever you want the Biome to be), grab the Mushroom Grass Seeds and place down onto the selected Mud tile. We recommend placing your Seeds with gaps in between for the Mushrooms to spread across the 100 tiles.

To complete a Mushroom Biome you must hit the 100 tile requirement for it to become a Biome. Whilst you can place down the Grass Seeds and wait for them to grow and spread, alternatively you can obtain 100 tiles of Mushroom Grass as a safety precaution should anything happen to your surface Biome. The easiest way to make a Mushroom Biome is to place whatever amount of Grass Seeds you obtain and wait for them to spread across the Mud blocks. Whilst, obtaining 100 tiles of Mushroom Grass Seeds is a much longer method, it may prove necessary should anything happen to your planted Seeds.

Those are the steps for making a Mushroom Biome in Terraria. See the benefits of growing this Biome below.

The Benefits of a Mushroom Biome

Mushroom Biomes can be used to summon an NPC called Truffles. He can only spawn in if you are playing on Hardmode and have made a Surface Mushroom Biome. Truffles has special items for you to purchase should you summon him. These are:

  • Mushroom Cap (Cost: 2 Gold Coins)
  • Strange Glowing Mushroom (Cost: 45 Gold Coins)
  • Dark Blue Solution (Cost: 15 Gold Coins)
  • Mushroom Spear (Cost: 70 Gold Coins)
  • Hammush (Cost: 40 Gold Coins)
  • Autohammer (Cost: 1 Platinum)
  • Any Pylon (Costs: 10 Gold Coins)

There are specific criteria to hit for item purchase. These are:

  • Mushroom Spear and Hammush – You must defeat at least one mechanical boss to purchase these items.
  • Autohammer – You must defeat Plantera to make this item available for purchase.
  • Any Pylon – When in a Biome, the vendor (Truffle) must be happy with living inside the Biome. Increase happiness with specific living bonuses. Such as; Solitude bonus (place another NPC within 25 tiles of Truffles). As Truffles likes Mushroom Biomes, this should be a relatively easy criterion to hit so that you can purchase a Pylon. The best NPC to summon with Truffle is Dryad.

Any Pylon can be sold by Truffles so long as he is inside a Hybrid Biome. As you are manually planting a Mushroom Biome on the surface, you will naturally hit this criterion. The exclusion stock are Forest and Cavern Pylons which cannot be combined with another Biome. The easiest Biome to craft a Mushroom Biome in is the Jungle. However, as the building requirement is Mud, you can place this in any Biome of your choosing to create a Surface Mushroom Biome.

Another option is to place your Mushroom Biome on an elevated surface by creating a Floating Island. This will keep the darkness of the Biome away from the Surface. We recommend going to 450 feet above the Surface level. If you have a depth meter you will be able to see exactly where you are from the Surface. This helps with exploring underground. Another benefit of having a Mushroom Biome on the surface is that you can put a Lake in it. This will allow you to fish specific mushroom-biome related fish.

Final Note

Mushroom Biomes will spawn in Mushroom-related enemies into the area. Enemies that can spawn in are; Spore Zombies. However, having NPCs such as Truffles and Dryad will reduce the spawn rates of these enemies.
